Backup and Clone my whole site to a backup site??

Hey Warriors,

I want to essentially clone my whole website and have a second copy of it at a backup site where I can do practice coding on it ...as well as have a backup copy of the site in case anything ever goes wrong...

How should I go about doing this? Do I just copy and paste my public html folder ...and what about databases etc?

Thanks.

Is it a Wordpress website? If yes you can simply install iThemes Security plugin. It has option to backup you database too. If you are on cPanel hosting and your web hosting supports Softaculous one click script installer, then it also has a wordpress site backup option which also includes a database backup.

There are a number of plugins but some are paid. One of the plugins I like is this:

Again, if it's a WP site, here's the one I use.

      Backup Creator

Fast, easy, and even clones all your plug-ins. Never had a problem with it.

If it is a WordPress Site their are some great suggestions already listed. I personally used Backup Buddy...does an amazing job of backing up the entire site and will upload it to remote locations automatically.

If it is not a WordPress site, you can either copy the entire public html folder over, or if you know linux nd have shell access you can rsync the data. In regards to the DB, using phpmyadmin, you can export the DB to a file and re-import the file back to your backup server via phpmyadmin their.

I would use caution when purchasing from backupcreator.com We purchased an "unlimited license" and have used it for several months. However, the just shut us down with no notice! We maintain over 100 websites in our own private network of sites and use it for those clients that we host on our servers and manage their websites as well. We only found out when a client needed a restore and we logged in to see the plugin had been remotely disabled...again with NO NOTICE TO US. We sent in a support ticket and look at the exchange below. KEEP IN MIND THEY CLOSED THESE TICKETS AFTER MY REPEATED REQUEST FOR RESOLUTION WERE IGNORED. THERE IS NO WAY TO CONTACT THEM OR ROBERT PLANK OUTSIDE OF THE TICKET SYSTEM AS WELL. READ THE CORRESPONDENCE TICKETS BELOW AND SEE WHAT YOU THINK!

This is my Backup Creator Email: timwalker@xxx Can you please let me know why this is not working?

Backup Creator says: It is not working because your license has been out of compliance.

You do not own the developers license and you have installed Backup Creator on hundreds of sites/url's that you do not personally own and are not registered to you.
This is CLEARLY shown in the members area where you downloaded the plugin and on the sales page.
ALL url's have been banned. If your clients would like to unban their URL's they will need to contact us PRIOR to purchasing their own license for EACH individual URL they would like unbanned

I respond with: I'm sorry, we have NOT installed this plugin on hundreds of domains "we do not own". We host and manage our clients websites, as well as design them, in most cases we also own the domain. I am SURE there are not "100's" of domains.

However, if we need to purchase the developers license a FRIENDLY email advising us to do so as well as the means to purchase would be helpful. Other than just BANNING our domains.

Please restore access to the members area as well as your reasoning behind determining we are so far out of compliance. I am willing to purchase the developer's license if we in fact have done what you claim.

    Thanks, Tim Walker, Lead Developer

Hi Tim, this isn't the place to post publicly about Backup Creator, but as we stated in your support tickets, we have whoised even just a handful of these domains and even the domains themselves are registered to other people besides you.

I'm not sure why you have posted this message to me at the bottom of an innocent bystander's thread, but you have pirated our software (distributed it to hundreds of people without paying). I would appreciate you deleting your post here.

Another way you might want to try especially if it isn't Wordpress is to Log into cPanel.

        Navigate to Files>Backups.

Follow the directions to backup both Home directory as well as MySQL.

This is how I manually backup my shopping carts.

For all cpanel-based sites, whether HTML or Wordpress, do a "full backup" (from within cpanel). No need to buy a WP plugin.

Keep in mind that with a "full backup" of your site, you need shell access in order to restore it. Most shared hosting accounts don't give you shell access - you need to get their helpdesk to restore it.

Do avoid the need for shell access, do a partial backup (in two stages) - then you can restore it yourself without needing shell access.

I have tried almost all the plugins available, the best so far I have found is UpdraftPlus.

It has a free version which does pretty much everything unless you need some advanced option that you can purchase from their site (modular upgrade is also available).

Use cPanel and do a complete backup of your site. Then use that backup to clone to any other site. You'll have to change a couple of references to the domain URL in the wp-config.php file.
