can you do this to a PDF document?

I think I know the answer to this, but thought I'd throw it out to the best forum for any advice.

I have a client that wants to sell four separate books and embed hyperlinks within each document (pdf) linking to the other three. Well, this is no big deal. But here is the kicker.

He wants to prevent the hyperlink based on what the customer buys. In other words, if the customer only buys one book, the customer only gets access to that book he bought and basically render the other hyperlinks to the other three useless.

My only solutions were to either package the books separately, controlling the links that way. Or, possibly a better solution would be to create a membership based site allowing access only to specific books based on membership status.

Any other suggestions would be welcome.

What about if the customer buys that book and wants to purchase another that you have mentioned? I would embed it so that when a customer buys a product they can also be "informed" about the other 2 products. Just giving my 2 cents here.

    Dan,
It doesn't make sense? Why not show all the links (indicating the other products he has) instead of not-showing it (which would seem to defeat the purpose in the first place).

It would be easier then to use a access control requiring id and password to get to them. Of course, only purchasers will get the access details.

Or perhaps your client should have a sales page, talking about the other products he has, with a BUY NOW button, which when completed will then take the purchaser to the actual download page. You can then use DLguard or any of the other access tools for product delivery/fulfilment.

Sounds like a very complicated way of doing things. I would say setup separate password protected pages online that contains the other books. Depending on the customer's purchase you can have only the urls and passwords to the other books that customer is entitled to. Just a thought.

Why not have some sort of an IPN script, that checks what the customer bought, and shows only links to them? I think it might be possible using PayPal's shopping cart feature.

This is my idea for similar cases:
Basically, generate the eBook (PDF) dynamically, on the fly. At least one page, at the end.
