How to get content for free?

I have a pretty good understanding of SEO and I'm learning the social media stuff. The problem I'm having is with content. I don't have a huge budget or much of a budget at all really. How can I find written and or video content for free? I don't want spun content or stuff that has been on other sites. I want unique content that the search engines will love. I had seen there was a place that offered guest blogging. But, it seems that Google had problems with this.

Are there any ways that I can build sites and get fresh content from others for free?

  • I suggest finding a good mentor and copy off their content with his consent and obvious agreement.

Find a mentor that has proven success and just copy what is working for him.

Even so if you dont go that route, you can find leaders in your niche, see what articles they create. Read it and learn it and make it your business to know their business.

Then reword their article in your own words.

This is the only way unless outsource and find freelance writers.

Google has absolutely no problem with guest blogging at all.

What it had (and has) a huge problem with is "blog networks" which seem to exist for SEO purposes, i.e. "to manipulate the algorithms of their page-ranking software" (as they see it).

I don't know any ways of getting good-quality unique content without paying for it.

You can ask people, I suppose (maybe identifying and contacting them through their resource-box links in places like "Ezine Articles"?) but it's not easy to imagine why writers would be willing to provide that, unpaid?

Joseph's suggestion above of "re-writing other people's articles in your own words" would of course be breaching people's copyrights by creating "derivative works" contrary to the law of copyright. Not only is this unethical and illegal, but it can also get you into other problems regarding your websites, domain-name registrations, etc. I urge you not to try that.

I've done plenty of guest blogging in a large variety of different niches, since 2009, but have certainly never given a webmaster unique content as a guest post. I've always found that webmasters who want guest posts tend to judge them by their quality, and by their potential interest to their own readers/visitors, not according to whether or not they happen previously to have been published elsewhere. (Most of the world's leading news and sports websites seem to take this view as well: they syndicate a lot of their content from places like Reuters, Associated Press and so on. "Just saying".)

I agree with everything she says there; HOWEVER, you can take several articles on a subject, extract the important points and write up your own article in your own words. There's nothing wrong with that and, unless you're writing fiction or about a subject you know very well, it's pretty much the only way you can do it.

How much traffic would a site have to get to make guest blogging attractive enough for people to do it for free? I'm talking about people who produce quality content.

I think you'd have to ask the "people" that ... in other words, it would vary, wouldn't it? (How would you prove what your traffic is, to them? The only way I know of, for me, to know much traffic another site has, is to see its server logs ...).

From my perspective as someone who does as much guest blogging as possible (I find it a really good traffic-source, overall), I don't really care how much/little traffic someone has, because I'm never giving away unique content anyway, so there's no potential downside to me, really. (Why does this matter so much to you? Surely what matters is whether it's unique to your readers/visitors??).

    If you want free content that the search engines will love there are 2 options;

    - write it yourself. Take ideas & inspiration from other articles and blogs & create your own content (this can be time consuming!)

    - You can also find quality writers on Freelancer.com & iwriter.com who can write a unique quality article for you. (this'll cost you but is great time saver)

    Also:

Why not take that article, convert it into a PowerPoint Presentation & make a video out of it with you narrating the video.

      There are some other options.

Licensed content. The potential here is huge. You basically pay for the privilege of using content that someone else created - often in another niche. The terms of the license will let you know exactly what you can and can't do with the information.

Public Domain Content. Another gigantic opportunity for those who put in the time to find PD material . . . it's everywhere! Books, reports, magazines, videos, movies, music, art work, graphic elements, you name it - it's in the public domain.

PLR content that you modify to make it your own. PLR material is everywhere and generally quite inexpensive. Just be sure to rewrite it so that it's your unique content.

Content is available everywhere, even if you don't write.

    Call me old fashioned.

But the best way to get free and unique content is to create it. (Even if you're not particularly skilled. You can still learn. It's arguably the most valuable skillset... Especially in today's world of mediocre content. Therefore content creation is a skill worth honing).

EDIT: If you're looking for other forms of ethical "done for you" content, it's definitely feasible to "automate" different types of RSS feeds, but that content won't necessarily be unique or helpful.

If you're after "done for you" free and unique content, then I would say guest blogging is your best bet.

Just create your own. Wake up early and dedicate 30 minutes each morning to writing a 1,000 word article. Then market the heck out of that 1 article. Turn it into a PDF and submit to slideshare or scribd, and even create a Youtube video out of it. Don't make a "talking-article" - that will get you banned. Just have yourself on camera talking to the folks on Youtube. You may want to practice first though, just to make sure you don't look like an idiot in front of a camera lol. You can even re-invent that 1 same article and turn it into a podcast. Then submit it to iTunes.

Content is tough to get for me as well and i have never been lucky with iwriter or freelancers. They might write nice but the content is often very low level.

I write the content myself and I have a fiverr guys that proofreads my work since I am not a native English speaker.

Exactly what I was going to recommend.

You should at least try to write some content on your own and if you're not satisfied with the quality hire proofreader to take care of the mistakes. It's a lot cheaper than hiring an actual writer.

I do not think anyone is willing to write for you at no cost
you can still find content with low-cost white label rights (PLR) after but you will need to rewrite
if you do not want to rewrite them you can find online for free tools that do it for you
considers that they are robots then you still have to correct them after
but it becomes a very simple task if you know English
I advise you to save directly to buy the ebook plr so the more content related to each other.

  • If you don't want to write, taking photos or making videos is a great way to make content. All you need is a camera and editing software.

Or if you still want an original article, why not just dictate your article and have it transcribed? You can use Dragon or hire someone to transcribe it, which is cheaper than a writer.

I can think of at least a couple ways to do this but they will still require some work on your part.

Method 1: Find experts in your niche and ask them to do an interview for your site. Try to find something that they write a lot about or have a lot of knowledge about.

Another technique is to ask them to do an interview about a topic that they have a related product for. This will give them more incentive to do an interview for your site and provide great content because you will link back to their site and give them targeted traffic to promote their product to.

With an interview you will still have to create the questions and some content but they will provide a lot of content for you as well. Always make sure to go out of your way to link to their site and give them the promotion they deserve for doing the interview.

Method 2: Content curation. Find one article or multiple articles on other blogs and websites in your niche on a particular topic. Take some of the key points from their article and quote them. Be sure to link back to the original article.

Also provide your insight or take on the articles you are curating.

Find YouTube videos, slideshare presentations, infographics, and more that you can share on your blog. Again, add your commentary and insight to the content.

With any type of content curation always make sure you have permission to use it before posting it on your site.

Method 3 User generated content. Another great way to get a lot of free content is user generated content. For example: the forum you are on right now has a ton of user generated content. If your site has a forum in your niche you can get a ton of free content from forum users. (starting a successful forum is much easier said than done but it is an idea)

Write short articles and ask your readers questions. Asking your readers questions can get more user generated content for your site.

For the most part, content is almost never free. It will usually involve your time or money. Either you spend the time creating the content, promoting others content on your blog, or you pay for quality content.

    Hope this helps!

Call me old fashioned, but you should be able to write your own content completely free of charge and it should be as good as, or better, than anything else that's out there. Why? Because if you've chosen your niche wisely you should be passionate about the subject and can therefore write freely, perhaps offering insites that others don't.

So if you're struggling for content ideas it might be because you're not an expert or lacking in passion for your chosen niche. You can overcome either of these if you have the desire to succeed.

      You're old-fashioned, Jonny.

I agree with you, though, to a large degree, so probably I am, too.

(There are others, especially those whose first language isn't English, too, to whom that doesn't quite apply.)

would like to make a suggestion re a method that has helped me hugely: try using dictation software, for example Dragon Dictate. I find with that I can knock out an 800 word blog post in about 10-15 minutes; with the big advantage that the tone is conversational, which appears to work well.

    Hope that helps

If you want quality content for free, it is very unlikely. But there is a way to get it done for cheap and still be good quality. You can get it done at fiverr.com for $5. I know you have probably heard of fiverr before, but it is the best way to go if you are looking for low priced quality content.

Hope this helps PM me if you have any questions

I think it's very unlikely that people will agree to their content being re-written, Tony. But there are certainly huge numbers of people who'll be only too happy for it to be syndicated with accreditation and without being re-written. Including - more or less by definition - every person who's ever put an article into an article directory, because that's what article directories are there for.

Write it yourself is the best way to control quality. The more you write, the easier it gets, at least for me. I often find myself writing when I am sitting around doing nothing, like if I am waiting in a doctors office or waiting for a movie to start. I just write in on my handphone and then when I get home I go over what I had written and fix it or add to it.

The guest blogging is more difficult than it seems.

In addition, if you want quality content, and above all UNIQUE, which is one of the basic principles to avoid being penalized by google, or pay someone who can write well in your niche or you'll need to write your articles.

Unfortunately if you do not have the money you need to invest your time. Also you have to think well to the keywords, there are software that can advise you what keywords to use to get more traffic, how longtailpro, a software able to show you the best keywords.

There isn't a way to have a free content, but there are some methods to have more traffic on your blogs.
