Businees Degree or Computer Degree for Internet Marketing?

Hi guys, I'm new here, this is gret forum. I only want to ask you if you think if it's better for you to get a business/marketing degree in college or a computer engineering/computer science degree to work full time as internet marketer and for companies or degree isn't real necessary for you?

I'm currently a computer engineering student, I like Java, logo and website Design etc but I've started IM this year and I see now I really like IM and Marketing in general.. So which is better for you ?

I tought computer engineering could be better, because when I'll leave college I'll know programming languages and I can still learn marketing myself, but it's more difficult computer engineering than busines...

The more you know the more its better but to succeed in IM, no degree is necessary. There are many high school drop outs who made big name in IM.

IMO, you should choose between "business/marketing" and "computer engineering/computer science" without the worry or thought that one is better than the other for Internet marketing. Surely either education will prepare you for what's needed.

The technical skills in Internet Marketing can be learned, out-sourced, or hired to someone in your company. Most of the other necessities are not the kinds of subjects you'll learn in business or engineering classes.

The true value of a college degree is that it will give you a career path that you might fall back on if IM doesn't work for you. In addition, your years of college will prepare you with discipline, good work habits, great researching skills, good people skills, and all the rest that will come to play in your business.

So yes, get a college degree first. Pick whichever career path appeals to you most (and for which you have the best aptitude) - neither will give you an advantage over the other in IM. When you have your degree in hand, you will be able to look at all your options and determine best if you are a career employee or small business owner material.

An I.M degree is useless, stick with the computer engineering/computer science degree and learn a trade that is in demand. You can get a business/marketing degree here on the WF for free and in less time.

Go with the computer engineering degree and focus on web applications and programming. You'll be able to build programs, web applications and all of your own landing pages with ease. If you don't make it in the world of IM, you'll have your degree to fall back on and will be able to find contract work or sell services and still make money.

Wow! They have degrees for that stuff now? That would be impressive, but I think you can learn as much online (for free or much cheaper) as you can at a university. Just beware of other marketers who want to rip you off or take advantage of you.

  • I've seen many "what do you think I should do", or "what would you do" threads. And every time I see one, I can almost with certainty predict that the person asking will have a difficult time becoming an Entrepreneur who will be able to against the grain in order to make things happen.

Assuming that you expect a percentage of responses here to lean towards either getting a business marketing degree or a computer engineering/computer science degree, and that you then may decide to choose a life/career path that the majority of strangers vote for, is in my opinion a very sad proposition.

The future of every type of business is unpredictable, and life is short, therefore I suggest that you figure out what makes you tick, what makes you really happy, what type of activity / project would make you want to stay up all night working on, (even if it was for free), and then choose something along those lines to do for a living.

Well, at least that's what worked for me.

Then if you must, get a degree and obtain the related skills in a class room setting if you feel that this will give you a better chance. However, I never have believed this to be absolutely necessary in order to be successful in ones life/career.

You're abosutely right man, thanks. I see now I can stay up all night for IM and Marketing because I really like, btw some programming skills is always better to have so I think It's better for me computer engineering. Businees degree most of my friends work for banks and I don't really like this, only the part of marketing.

Good grief. He was just asking for opinions. Most likely a teenager without a lot of experience, but wisely trying to pick the brains of others who have gone before. Asking for advice and surrounding themselves with experts is what leaders do so they get opinions that can corroborate their thinking, create new thought lines they had not considered, and help avoid making mistakes.

This is exactly what entrepreneurs should do.

If you're not seeking advice and trying to learn from others, whether from asking questions on a forum or reading what others have said on blogs, websites, etc., then you're a loner - not an entrepreneur leveraging the knowledge of others - and IMHO less likely to succeed.

Isn't that why this forum exists? To get answers, ideas, debate topics, and along the way get new insights and knowledge.

As for the original question: computer or business degree? I say go with your interests. Both skills can be learned along the way and it is a huge mistake to believe learning a computing language is more difficult than learning business skills.

Food for thought - who is more likely to have long-term success as an entrepreneur - someone with business skills or someone with programming skills? In my view it is hands-down someone with business skills, and lacking this knowledge is a primary reason why so many marketers fail to make anything in IM.

In college I started with a computer degree, found something else I also liked, and ended up with a double major. For a third issue I liked I was only a few credits short of a third major and it ended up being my minor. I wouldn't say computer versus business classes are mutually exclusive.

Enjoy your time in college and learn as much as you can. That includes asking people here, fellow students, teachers, counselors, etc., "what you would do". It's a great question.

Finally, get your degree. Degrees are invaluable and open doors. Study after study after study after study has proven, as a general rule, someone with a degree will make more money during their life than someone who does not. It's also an invaluable experience that pays dividends well beyond what is learned in class.

This is where I would disagree. The studies show that people who have a degree are more likely to be successful, yes. But that is confusing causation with correlation. Something you should have learned in your intro to stats class. Motivated people tend to go to college so it's not a surprise that motivate people with a degree tend to do better in life. A motivated individual can be wildly successful without a degree. True there is a snob factor in society. Some tend to look down on people who don't have a degree but they tend to be worthless themselves and the only thing that makes them feel superior is having their degree. No one looked down on Bill Gates or Steve Jobs.

This is a good article on the subject http://www.huffingtonpost.com/blake-...b_1644107.html

Bill Gates went to college at Harvard.

          Gates once said:

"The single most important key to my business success is a working knowledge of the tax code."
Note his reference to business issues and not programming.

Steve Jobs went to Reed College. Even though he could not afford to go, class were so important to him he slept on the floor in friends' rooms so he could attend, and sometimes begged for money.

Don't confuse an exception to the rule as being the rule and justifying not going to college. Take a motivated individual who may succeed without college, and just watch what he or she can do with a college experience.

Even if someone like Gates had a business opportunity which lured him out of college before obtaining his degree, it is, ironically, what he learned in college, the contacts he was making (Paul Allen, Ballmer, etc), which led to his ability to start a business.

I have never heard of Gates or Jobs advocating that someone not attend college at all.

I have friends working at both Microsoft and Apple, and I'd say their college degrees were very important in landing their positions.

Any link to studies that proclaim the majority of college attendees are considered "Motivated"? I'm afraid you may be falling into the same category you are accusing Brian of.

I don't necessarily think motivated people are jumping into college.

People have college thrown down their throats since they are young kids. If people wanted good jobs, you wouldn't see all of these graduates with worthless degrees. I say worthless because they can't get a job with them which tends to be the end goal for college.

I have known plenty of kids, while I was in college, who went with the easier degree. No thought of a good job to be found.

There are actually schools that offer Internet Marketing specific degrees, so if you want to get a degree that is useful for your internet marketing efforts, that seems like the ideal choice. But, as posters before me said, the degree is not really needed for doing IM, and I think most people who succeed learn from the tons of material that are around on the web, not least in this forum, and most of all, by doing. Me too, I got a degree that's completely, and I mean completely unrelated to anything IM.

I would go with the computer science degree and then a masters in business. Couple that with Internet and Affiliate Marketing you learn online will put well into 7 digit territory. When you get to the mba side of things make sure you get heavy into Michael Porters Strategic Management. Closest I've seen to that around these forums was Ready Fire Aim by Michael Masterson

All feedback here are good and in some way will help you find your way in the IM world.

For me, I would advise you to continue what you are taking now. Then like everyone mentioned here, take one step at a time.

IM does not require any degree since your success will still depend on your will, patience, understanding, and experience online.

Having a degree and knowledge in technical stuff is an advantage but still when you want to pursue IM, you will need more than that! Failing is also an additional factor when it comes to IM. It is okay to fail as long as you continue to learn from your failures and you still have that will to continue learning despite all the challenges.

    Good luck!

How about a nice shiny BA in Philosophy =D

That's actually what i just spent $40,000+ to get in university and it takes a creative mind to see how it benefits my business.

I can tell you right now that I am far more analytical than i was prior to reading dense and thick volume of complex arguments stretching hundreds of pages long...oh boy! Lol

My mind is a lot sharper than it was when i was just working my day job all day long, just to come home exhausted and sleep for 6 hours or whatever. Then wake up to go back to work.

If anything maybe you should take a few courses, especially those that might not count toward a degree, for webs design or computer science for coding.

I can't tell you the number of times I've had to outsource to a coder for even the simplest projects just because i didn't have the knowledge myself.

I say study business and personal development (because having a business forces you to push yourself, sometimes quite a lot) on the side while you hone your web development skills

Thanks again for your answers guys. After about 1 month, I'm thinking to switch to MBA or marketing/economics degree.. Why? Because I like it most, I like to think about new business ideas, I like to increase ROI of my blogs etc I like to be entrepreneur of my self. I'd like to make my dream job one day, thanks to IM too. I could just finish my computer engineering basic degree to get some knowledge of programming and working as freelance, but I'd stick to master in business/marketing because I've seen this is my real passion.

I've got three degrees from nice universities. How much do they help me in IM? None. What I do have is a killer list of contacts on my cell phone of buddies I got drunk with. Could that be duplicated without spending $xxx, xxx. Yes. If you get a degree do it in a specific skill. Computer science is better than general business or marketing. If business than do accounting. Actually, accounting is very good.

I'm having this debate with my GF now. She want's her boys to go to college. She thinks the experience is invaluable. I said they would be better off backpacking around the world for a year. My main point is that college tuition is CRAZY expensive. It doesn't make sense now. I got my degrees 20 years ago and then it wasn't cheep. Now it's just bat shit stupid. It's not really worth the ROI. If someone is going to pay for your degrees go for it. If you can get a scholarship, go for it. Don't take out loans to get a degree.

You should choose to get a degree in any topic you love. If you don't it will be very hard to finish it. Basically, a degree tells that you have certain academic skill set. This is important for companies, because then they know that you can research a topic and work in a structured manner.

I think degree is not important, You need to know the technique of business. First of all you should learn the business, here there is no need to any degree. But you have the basic Idea about the computer & business. Such as if you want to make a website, there nee HTML or phs, you may know something about it, if you do not know some coding you can search on the search engine, your problem will be solved.

Many universities are now teaching short term courses for SEO. A marketing degree won't really tell you how to market online unless it is specifically dealing with the online world.

A programmer will usually earn more money in a real world job than most internet marketers make. Why not finish your computer degree and get a real world job and save the internet marketing for weekends and part time?

EH, you're probably better off with the computer science degree so you can either do your own coding or know what you're talking about when dealing with coders you intend to pay if you need programming done.

Unless the professors teaching the business/marketing stuff actually run or have run their own successful business, I wouldn't pay much attention to anything they have to say - especially when it comes to making money as an entrepreneur.

I have a couple of degrees.

I was, for the most part, going for an art degree (graphic design). I minored in business but ended up going for a bachelor in business since it came very natural to me.

My major in business was Information Technology which gave me a foundation in programming, systems analysis and design, databases and so on...

Surprisingly, my graphic design has been a huge help in my own products which typically is software I create and design myself.

For me, I wouldn't have changed anything when it comes to working for myself. That was always in the back of my head even throughout college. If I had wanted to work for someone else I may have went with a Computer Science degree. The way it worked out, the business degree was just there since I was already minoring in it for my art degree.

College is only the start when it comes to learning.

Anyway, more on topic... it's really hard to tell.

    Wait, no, it's not.

    Here's a simple mindmap.

Does your business model involve a lot of techy stuff? Do you sell websites, do SEO, graphic design and other SERVICES?

    Computer sciences. IT.

Do you create products and sell those? Do you work as an affiliate? Maybe you're starting on online marketing business?

    Business degree.

    Simple as that!

Marketing is the key word I believe. If the internet and computers all decided to blow up one day, having more knowledge about marketing itself would be more beneficial IMO.

Depends on the person. Some do better in school.

There is always a combination of the two.

I try learning something on my own first - but seek out courses at times which may give me more insight to what it is I'm trying to learn.

        Bingo!

Everyone can make money. But to sustain that and grow it for long term, it boils down to knowing how to run/manage a business.

Sounds like you have it all covered.

If you can run a business, you can hire someone else to do the marketing and the computer techie stuff for you.
thanks for replies. Btw I've found a good book it's called MBA master of business, it's on top american business book, Would you advice me reading it? I think it could be a good starting to understand a bit more about business

I think Marketing degree will be best ! You can either go for a computer degree as well but if you are specifically looking for a marketing job then go for a marketing degree. The choice is yours

Hi, Very nice question.. I was there some years ago.
Man Internet marketing more difficult than programming. It cant be done by computer. To become successful in internet marketing you need 'DATA" and it is currency in internet marketing, you dont need any degree. Best of luck for your journey...

You'll definitively have an advantage If you get a degree. But you will have to read about FaceBook marketing and other PPC networks, landing pages and color theory, list building and affiliate marketing. With the exception of color theory. These are not taught in colleges. Your basically learning how to develop marketing campaigns.

Knowing how to program only really means that you can develop wordpress themes. Your going to eventually always use wordpress for projects, unless you decide to sell wordpress themes, web development, apps or software etcc to other businesses or people, .

Just know that the more skills you have the bigger creative advantage you will have against others.

But to be critical, none of those degrees are gonna do anything for you making money online from marketing.

In my opinion the best thing you can study to make you a better marketer is human nature.

Study some NLP, find out what makes people tick, and buy.

I agree with Brian, if you get the chance to go to college...go!

I'm a Kinesiology major and I make a full-time income, my motivation for college isn't really so I can get a "good job", because I plan on being a job creator.

Just major in your passion, and everything will take care of itself.

I faced the exact same dilemma when I started studying 3 years ago. I chose for computer engineering/computer science. Mainly because the technical background seemed more usefull to me then some common business/marketing knowledge, to be able to build my own internet business.

Also keep this quote from Jim Rohn in mind (it's one of my favorites):
Formal education will make you a living; self-education will make you a fortune

computer engineering is a great asset to have and a very much in demand skill. You will far surpass any business or marketing degree, if this is your passion then follow it.

I believe in working to your strengths and doing something that you love, outsource the rest.

I just come up with the Idea that my dream job is working with the business and computers too, so if I'll get a basic computer engineering degree it would be good then for me to get a basic business degree just for personal use. I know I'll need more experience in business and computers, the degree is only a start, self-learning I've always done that with great results instead of going to school and stop..

What's wrong with a double major? Or a Computer Engineering major with a Business minor (perhaps even focusing on entrepreneurship)?

A traditional Marketing degree won't do you much good unless you plan on going to work for a large company (P&G, etc.) afterward in order to get some practical experience on someone else's dime.

At least with the skills you'll be learning through your Computer Engineering studies you may be able to have your degree paid for and possibly money in the bank by the time you graduate by freelancing in your free time.

I guess you could start a business with the skills learned while getting a business degree too. But you would be burning the candle at both ends a lot more. You can take a break from freelancing at any time.

as i see it, by asking us that question it means that you are not in keen of either marketing or computer degree. otherwise, you would choose one of those that you really want to do and then combine it with IM ...

Full Sail, an accredited online university has an Internet Marketing bachelors degree if you are interested in going with this idea full time. You would not just be working offline for yourself but most likely working in a corporation as part of a social media management team. There could be a good future for you in this type of work if you really enjoy it.
