I've read that spam blog commenting is dead and should never be used but in a niche I found the top 3 spots are all sites with tons of blog comment spam. It is a lower competition keyword, does that matter at all? Does blog commenting work for lower competition keywords?

Oh, how I wish that were true.

Blog commenting can work well (if it's well done) without any qualifications about "keywords".

The main benefits of blog commenting have nothing to do with SEO at all.

I can tell you that most blogs won't let garbage comments stick. Personally if there's no value behind the comment I trash it immediately.

Months of simply commenting on blogs could be spent adding content to your own to rank your own stuff naturally.

True, but all that content on your own site can ever bring you is some gradual, eventual search-engine traffic, which isn't much use at all to many of us (http://www.warriorforum.com/main-int...ml#post8659398), whereas content (even it's just "comments") published on other people's sites can bring you some of their already-targeted, already-qualified traffic, which is a whole different (and often far superior) ball-game.

In addition to which, blog commenting can be the first step in relationship-building with the webmaster as well as with her traffic. If you go about it well enough, today's blog-comment can be tomorrow's guest post (which is another reason why I still do this).

Comment spam for SEO purposes is most definitively dead. Comment "Spam" period, is also dead. High quality, handwritten commenting certainly has its place.

In 2012, Google has released an update Penguin 2.1. It basically
sends the Comment Spam to its edge.

Yup ... if you look at it in terms of backlinks, then it surely won't be useful to you.

Meanwhile it continues to be very useful to some Warriors who are making their full-time livings online, partly by attracting highly targeted, responsive traffic from it.

Intelligent targeted commenting is definitely valuable for gaining traffic, and for establishing genuine relationships with other webmasters and bloggers- . Spam commenting is just complete garbage with no value whatsoever, it is only practiced by ignorant wannabes who just will not listen or learn anything - I don't know exactly what weird fantasy land spam commentators live in, but you would think they would eventually get the message - it is the reason why so many do not make a cent.

    Did you see any comments?

It is because people don't want to read the comment.

Nobody cares about the comment in the blog.

After 10th comment, it is like the whole bunch of spam.

    No value at all.

I see so many people posting link with the comment, it doesn't work.

If you really want to make connection with the blog owner, it is good to comment regularly.

Blog comments generate a really freaking low traffic with high bounce rate.

It can only make a good relationship but you really need to leverage the number of blog you subscribe to.

I like a group of discussion where we can build relationship with each other.

    It works better for traffic.

That is why I create a group in LinkedIn so I can make a good connection.

There are comments that you see on newsfeeds which are totally irrelevant. Any comment that adds value will be appreciated and would increase stickiness of the website. The site owners know this and do what they can to moderate stuff. But again if you open the floodgates, then your website can look real spamy and it will then hurt your ranking.

The only time when I use blog commenting is when I find an article that is truly interesting and relevant and that I enjoyed reading. If the article was actually worthwhile, then I will take time to make a lengthy comment and link back to one of my own recent blog posts. If I didn't actually like the article, then chances are, it was not high quality, nor related to my niche, so those two things would disqualify it from getting my comment anyway. I'm not sure if this helps SEO but it has resulted in qualified traffic from blogs that are similar to mine as those are usually the ones I'm reading anyway.
