What's the angle. I don't get it yet

So I post a car for sale on Craigslist and get a reply like:

Do you still have the car? It's perfect. The price is fine. I will send you a check right away. May I have your address?

I knew it was a scam, but I wanted to see what they did. I replied and tracked the email as it was opened. It was opened in Tanzania .

Three weeks later I get an email: You scammed me. I sent a check.

I didn't get any check so I replied: I didn't get one.

They sent back a tracking number which was simply on that indicates someone "intended" to ship something, not that they actually did.

So what is this person hoping to get? All that for what?

Yep, its a scam. Unfortunately the person behind the scam is not very smart -- you can't send a car like that

Just don't send that car anywhere, that is for sure a scam. They are thinking that if they reply to hundreds of thousands of messages like yours then maybe 1 unlucky person will fall for their trap and then it is worth it to them.

    Ask him for his address.

    3 weeks later.

Contact him and tell him the car's already there.

    Tell him he scammed you.

The "typical" scam goes something like this:

    • Someone wants your car without the need to see or drive it.
    • They say that they're out of town on business, or that they're on vacation/honeymoon so they can't be reached by phone and that they're in the middle of a move away from your town.
    • They say that they have a mover in your town that's packing up their house and will have him bring a check over for the car.
    • The "mover" brings a "check" drawn on a foreign "bank." He gives it to you then takes your car.
    • The "mover" drives your car to a nearby port city where it's loaded into a container to be shipped overseas.
    • Your bank calls you saying that the check is no good.

Perhaps your scammer doesn't understand the script yet.

Ha Ha.. perhaps not! That's too funny. There is no way I would let a car leave without a cleared check. I guess they must be successful sometimes or they wouldn't keep trying.
I always give them my UPS store address just in case someone shows up.
