It's My 10 Year Anniversary - Here Are 10 Things I've Learned in 10 Years...

Hey Warriors!

I joined this site 10 years ago this month

Very exciting I know....

So I haven't been very active on here in years. I logged in here the other day and saw that this month was my 10 year anniversary. I decided that, due to my lack of activity and milestone anniversary, I should give something back.

Here it is: the top 10 things I've learned about making money online. Enjoy!

10) Making money online is both very hard and very easy. Let me explain. Figuring out what to sell and how to sell it is a very a time intensive process. It takes an enormous amount of work and patience to "find your niche." Once you do, however, making money online is not only easy....its a total blast!
9) The most important skills you can have as an IM'er are as follows: ability to write clear and compelling sales copy, Google Adwords, Wordpress, List building, knowledge of how to buy and sell on eBay
8)1 person in 1000 go from broke to rich in 30 days - Ignore anybody that says otherwise For the vast majority of successful IM'ers it takes years to build an income online...myself included
7) Article marketing sucks
6) Building an income online is just like building an engine - if just one part is bad, the entire engine won't run properly. The trick is to constantly test and tweak until you are running on all cylinders
5) The money really is in the list
4) Social media marketing is a fantastic way to promote yourself and your products but it is VERY time intensive and takes months to really see results
3) There really is a ton of money to be made in offline consulting and marketing. An IM'er with just a few months experience is, on average, MUCH more knowledgeable than the average business owner
2) Your friends and family will think you're crazy until you consistently make money...then they will think you're AMAZING!

Drum roll please....

And the number 1 thing I've learned over the past ten years is...

1) eBay is the fastest and easiest way to make your first dollar online. This isn't a shameless pitch for some ebay ebook or something, it's just something I've found to be true.

The first dollar I ever made online was on ebay all the way back in the year 2000. Although the site has changed massively in 14 years, nearly anybody anywhere can open an ebay account and start getting sales in just days.

However, ebay has tightened their restrictions on new sellers making it very difficult to sell for your first 60-90 days. But you can still get sales even with just a couple of feedback.

I have had a love hate relationship with eBay for many years. I love how easy it is to sell but hate the fees and often draconian rules*.

Between the year 2000 and today I experimented with MANY ways to make money online. I came back to eBay because it was the one thing I found that works consistently year after year

Unfortunately, as with anything else, there is a huge learning curve when it comes to becoming a Powerseller on ebay....but its worth it

Whew!

I hope everyone here found this post helpful. I'm sure many of you will disagree with some of the things I've said. But I sincerely hope most of you find this advice helpful!

*In October of last year my account was suspended for 1 week because I had listed a Dooney & Bourke purse but spelled "bourke" as "burke" in the headline. This small typo triggered not only a week suspension but also imposed severe restrictions on brands I could and could not sell. I eventually did get things worked out but that typo cost me a fortune and nearly drove me mad!

I agree with you. My first online money came from selling on Amazon not on ebay but they are very similar sites.

    Those are some great tips!

I never really used ebay to make money online. Well it makes sense though, go where the buyers are and sell.

I would say if you have a basic knowledge pn building sites, then flippa is just as easy. You can basically build a site in one day, list it and get paid in 3 days. These are all great things if you want to make your first dollars online.

And i agree, it takes a lot of time and effort to build a solid online business, but there are shortcuts ofcourse.

Firstly, awesome thread, sir. It's one of the best I've read so far in WF. I do agree, an average internet marketer has way more knowledge than a offline biz owner. But, offline marketing is entirely a different think, I reckon. However, Internet Marketing is way more profitable if it is done right. Good luck with your earnings sir!

I think there is a major disconnect in your perception of this point about offline and internet marketing - the point is being made that an internet marketer can offer the offline business owner substantial help with their marketing , not that the two are different -the main mistake offline business owners are making is to regard internet marketing as somehow 'optional' - if you look up the rate of business failure ( it is pretty high) I think this correlates with their unfortunate failure to understand they should be devoting a whole lot more attention to their online presence - traditional channels of marketing (T.V, Radio Print) no longer reach the same audiences. An offline business owner should be spending the bulk of their marketing budget on internet based marketing - which is a major opportunity for us.

I probably could have produced a list twice this size but I figured everyone loves a top 10 list

      And Jens,

I remember hearing about site flipping but never really got into it....I'd love to learn more. Send me a PM or something

Well i have sold sites before, but never really serious, just the odd site here and there and t was one of the first methods that made money for me. It was a small amount but that definately helped.

I saw some very succesful sellers though on flippa, one of them sold 450K+ worth of sites the past 2 years, so yes there's definately a business model to follow.

I'll send you a PM wiht that sellers profile if you want to check it out and maybe crack the code on how to do that.

I 100% believe that social media marketing is effective, but it takes time. I currently run an online phone case / accessory website geared towards a certain niche. I spend a lot of time on Pinterest prompting products and interacting with the community. Lo and behold, a month and a half in I made 2 sales within 3 days, both of which were from Pinterest. I would recommend taking a look into marketing on Pinterest, It may be very beneficial to you. For me, It's the main staple to my business!

I am definitely intrigued with pinterest.

A couple of years ago I worked as an eBay account manager for a local electronic parts company. I had a lot of down time and I used that time to research other ways to make money. At the time, Pinterest was something of a novelty but I remember reading that many offline business were having tremendous success with it.

I am certainly interested in learning more on how to use Pinterest to promote my eBay products :-)

Great post, and I agree with all of it! I would add though that people determined to work in IM really should make learning basic HTML/CSS and perhaps a bit of PHP a priority. I can't even imagine how hard it would be to make any money at all online without having a little bit of technical knowledge, yet I see it all the time (people who're looking for "methods" without even grasping the basics).

      Good advice!

The only reason I didn't list programming knowledge is because I don't feel that it's critical to online success. Admittedly, knowledge of HTML and PHP is an awesome skill to have but it's possible to build a six figure business online without knowing any of that stuff.

Congrats Zach, on still doing this for so long. My "official" signup date was also July 2004, although I was around here before then.

A ton of people steadily come online looking to make money, and soon enough they are gone. Not many are still around after a decade.

The "herd" here migrates to Amazon to do things. I'm not sure why Ebay seems to be overlooked. I don't sell much on Ebay, but am an affiliate, and the deals and variety of products sold can't be beat.

        .

That's truly incredible that we joined this place at about the exact same time! I also lurked around here for awhile before actually joining.

It certainly is rare for people to last as long as we have. I suppose the average lifespan for an IM newb is about 6 months.

Its actually kind of incredible how many times I tried, failed, and agave up. And yet no matter what I always came back to the warrior forum. I was just convinced that the internet was the way to go when it came to making money....and I was right

Excellent stuff here. I agree with just about everything you said. I like to think of it this way. Making money online is simple but not necessarily easy. Think about that and let it sink in.

It comes down to filling a legitimate need. I think out of the 10 points you brought up #10 is just a tiny bit off. Finding something to sell doesn't need to be hard. People have made it hard because they continue to frame it in the context of SEO. That means they approach it backwards. They put the search for keywords and all the rest of it first and try and fit that model to what they sell.

Once upon a time that worked but it no longer does. I believe finding something to sell is the easiest step in the process. Find something that people want, need and can afford and then give it to them with a smile. Treat them the way you want to be treated. I hung out with a major SEO dude a few years ago and he was the one that told me (I already knew but he made it very plain) that the keyword stuff was a bunch of unnecessary baloney. He said picking a market was simple.

First he'd take a few very obvious keywords. Some very common and some relevant, though not as common long tails. The results from those searches needed to show an average of 10 million relevant sites and an average of 5 or 6 Adwords ads. That was all he did to determine the market was profitable.

Personally, I think people, especially people new to marketing should pick a market they know something about and actually like. Once you have success and know what it takes to actually make money you can branch out and look at products based solely on profit.

#7. Article marketing sucks. I tend to agree but again, it's the accepted practice and execution that makes it suck. And again, it's people insisting to do it with an unrealistic measure of outdated SEO mixed in that find failure. Content syndication and curation is where it's at but there're only a few people I know that understand how to make it work right.

#1. eBay. I've made a pile of money on eBay. I agree that it's the easiest way to make good when starting out. But I see so many people complicating it. I cringe when I see someone asking how to drive traffic to their listing. eBay is its own ecosystem. People go there for almost everything under the sun. It's like a captive audience. Amazon is the same thing. Warrior Forum fits into that context as well - warm buyers with credit cards in their hands.

The trick is to choose stuff that sells. Once you've got that down, getting traffic to the offer takes care of itself. Here's a little tip that made me a lot of money. Offer a little bonus or freebie with your item and mention it in the listing title.

When I sold books I'd often throw in an additional related title and it always outsold the other listings. I've offered American flag lapel pins as a bonus. Family oriented CDs with jokes, games, ebooks, videos, and other stuff. Shark's teeth. There are all kinds of inexpensive, light weight value-added bonus items you can throw in that will get people to buy.

I like your comments on Social Media marketing. That's the traffic generator of the future. There's a cool little technique that's easy to do and will get you excellent results and almost no one is using it. Maybe a topic for another time.

this is how I started, and went from $20 a day to over $10k per month.

Getting new leads every day, with a working host is the way.

If you are not building a list and getting leads each day, you are better off getting one of those chitty 9 to 5'ers.

Congrats on the 10th yr Anniversary.

Can't agree more with the Ebay point. I think the first money we made online was with Ebay and it certainly provided seed money for other projects . It may not be what most people think of when talking about internet marketing but it never fails to deliver if you sell the right stuff at the right price.

I couldn't have put it better myself!

eBay certainly isn't as exciting as launching websites or selling high priced info products but certainly is a proven money maker and there's the potential to make millions.

When you said Ebay, I thought you meant the ebay AFFILIATE program! Shows where my mind is.

Seems like selling on Ebay would require a lot of shipping, work, inventory, for small ROI. With volume and high priced products, I guess that's different.

My first online money was eBay - as a drop-shipper! Sold laboratory equipment to people across the country, and never actually saw the merchandise. How sweet is that? No inventory, no shipping - just running ads and staying in touch with customers.

        Very nice!

I've never really experimented much with drop shipping except back in the early days when I had no idea what I was doing.

I'm looking into drop shipping as we speak. Hopefully I learn some awesome things about drop shipping on eBay

I agree that making money online is hard, it is really hard if you are just starting right now. Many people got out of the game due to the Google updates targeting affiliates, Amazon and similar platforms domination - you name the reason.

Many affiliate programs closed, other lowered the commissions to ridiculous amounts. Dropshippers are selling you at the prices of Amazon.

And there are so many crap courses out there teaching you things that used to work several years ago. If you are new and in the unfortunate even come to such course you are doomed.

There are very few things that work right now and you better take advantage of them.

To me: Amazon, eBay, Info products, Membership Sites - not especially in this order.

The very first thing I started doing to make money online was finding hidden gems at garage sales, Goodwill and facebook garage sale groups. It was great at the time, I was able to spend about 6-8 hours a month finding all the products, and an additional 3-4 listing and shipping them. On average I was able to make $700-$900 in 9-12 hours worth of work.

If you have the patience for it and are really into it, as well as eventually learn what you need to do, you can make a lot of money doing this.

Thanks for the post and congratulations on ten years!
