Don't Know What to Think About the Pending Squidoo Policy Changes

I love Squidoo, I always have. And, I have faith that the changes will make the site better over the long term. But, I am trying to sort it all out - what does it mean to me? Should I sit tight and wait? Should I continue to build lenses to presell clickbank and cj products? I just don't know what to do...

Anyone have any thoughts?

They mention that clickbank links will be reviewed on a case by case basis. They imply if you are building "quality" lenses, it will be business as usual.

PotPieGirl (Jennifer?) is moving her content to other places just to be sure it is saved if her lenses get locked, according to her website. Personally, I'm considering using a blogger blog to replace what I was using the lenses for.

I wonder if what they're doing is really in the best interests of the site? It's driving some of the top squidoo content creators away! People like PotPieGirl really do have quality lenses and it's a real asset. I'm not creating new lenses until I sort this out, and I may go through and take screen shots of them, just in case. I'm afraid that Squidoo won't be the same anymore. I want to believe that this will make the site better ... I was considering using blogger to replace what I was doing with the lenses, too.

Yes, that's what I'm choosing to do. Meanwhile, I think I'll back up my content just in case.

I got the two recent emails from PotPieGirl about the changes.

She seemed to be enthusiastic about the changes? ...I know she's a big booster for Squidoo....so I'm a bit surprised to hear she's moving her content. That is NOT a good sign, imo.

I'm not sure if she's moving the content or just backing it up? She still sounds enthusiastic about the changes (she just sent a mailing)... she's telling everyone not to panic. I know that Squidoo is just trying to make their site better... I may need to rethink how I use it.

Details of the upcoming policy changes can be found here: Squidoo Policy Update

Regarding ClickBank, they are treating it as a special case:

So while we're not blacklisting Clickbank on lenses, we're also not Whitelisting it right now. This means that the "No more than 9 outbound links to the same domain" limit applies to you. So be selective with your outbound linking and don't overdo it.
(Note: this link limit does not include HopAds shown via the ClickBank Module)

As long as you avoid the forbidden topics, and minimise the number of links you have on each lens, I think you'll be okay.

Squidoo has always been a place that was upfront and open to the fact that their lens-creators wanted to be compensated for their efforts. I don't think that will change. They are probably simply dealing with the same ridiculous amount of spamming and outright abuse that every other site is, and want people to be delivering real value so are making it known. I'd be shocked if they took the site in the direction of 'no commercial intent allowed' or anything like that.

Having said that, it is ALWAYS good to have backups of everything you make and submit.

I've just read over the addendum to Squidoo's TOS. IMers should be happy about these changes.

Squidoo is walking the walk. An Internet Marketing website that happens to use a social site as their business model that does not pretend to be something their not. Pretty refreshing really.

Those marketers that understand that longevity requires quality and that just chucking a bunch of stuff up against a wall to see what sticks may generate short term income but will never give you a business that last should be ecstatic at these changes. You will no longer have to compete with marketers that siphon off your customers without putting in their own leg work.

Squidoo is saying that as long as you're offering lenses that supply your readers with quality information or entertainment feel free to ply your trade. They are saying that they will expend the energy required to find and eliminate the crap. And that will make your job easier not harder.

After all, if you can't get your readers to click through to that clickbank product with 9 outbound links on the same page do you really think 15 or 25 or 35 will?

Squidoo's owners decided not be hypocrites. About time one of these social site owners did.

    Good On Ya Squidoo,

    Gene

I think it has no meaning at all if you are actually posting informative lenses with quality information.

Bottom line is, you don't need more than 9 links in a single lens to a single offer. In fact, 2 or 3 is just fine.

I think they are right, and very liberal. There isn't anything of any real concern to anyone with real valuable products and information.

I would continue to build your lenses just like before....Just make sure that your modules are at least 90% informative.

In terms of selling, I've only ever used the Big Arrow Module for my selling and it still does the trick! Once or twice throughout the lens is really all you need!

Always run each text module asking yourself 2 questions:
    1) Is it more informational than promotional?
    2) Will the reader find value in the content itself?

If you can answer yes to both, then you'll be fine!

Thanks everyone for the advice! I love the site, and I'm comforted. I've loved it ever since I started my account. Each change has made it better so I have high hopes - it's great to implement policy changes that boost the quality of the site. And of course, someone mentioned having backups at all times... I know, I know.

I agree that the change looks like it'll be good. It will make it easier to get found...

And the admonitions of backing things up... Something I needed to hear. reminded me to back up my hard drive right now (something I'm not doing nearly often enough).

How DO you back up your Squidoo lenses, BTW? Just create a PDF?

        Thanks.

I don't think that lensmasters who are building quality lenses are really going to suffer. I think that the primary people who are going to be hurt are the spammers. That, and the adult webmasters - adult content is already being outlawed so many other places, though, that I wasn't really surprised to see Squidoo do so as well.

That's the thing about depending on other sites for revenue. That's why I'm a firm believer of putting everything on your own server as well so that your stream of income won't dry up faster than you can blink. Same thing with Adsense, etc. These companies may change policies and drown you in a second. Have your own websites hosted on your own server or hosting account and optimize/promote those pages too.

Good point! It's easy to fall into a pattern and get too comfortable where you're at. Much better to set yourself up with multiple income streams and have as much control as possible over the destiny of your income.
