Hot Marketing - Jeff Goldblum dead (and then not)

Sooo, someone posts a fake news story that Jeff Goldblum has died from a fall in New Zealand.

Bam. It's all over the world and I start seeing it on several reputable sites, and I'm thinking of the adage that deaths come in 3s: Farrah, MJ, and then Goldblum.

Turns out the story was a hoax.

Now, if I could just learn something and spice up my own marketing to get similar fast results and traffic.

A good marketing strategy but not good in telling lies.People will know that you're just advertising and doesn't have any concern with the person you are talking about.

Might be consider quads this time:

      David Carradine
      Ed McMahon
      Farrah Fawcett
      Michael Jackson

Why was Jeff Goldblum chosen for a fake death report?
Considering he's a lead on Law and Order Criminal Intent, which is filmed in New York City ... can't see why he would be in New Zealand anyhow.

      Weird folks out there!

I'm starting the rumor that Jeff Goldblum has a fondness for sheep. That might explain why he is there along with a few well known IM gurus!

          Great Rumour George,

          Here's with local news story.

Funny thing is sheep are about 8th on the list of "fond things" behind the following

          1) Scenery - breathtaking
          2) Adventure activities (e.g. Bungee jumping)
          3) Wine (can't beat a good Riesling or Sav from NZ)
          4) Skiing (check out Queenstown winter festival on youtube)
          5) All Blacks and the Haka (What is rugby? What is a )
          6) Tramping/camping: some great spots like this one
          7) The people. The world loves "Kiwis"!

Haha - hope the shameless plug for my home country encourages a few of you to visit. Who knows, you may even see one of our 40 million sheep!

A guy I work with said the following about 4 hours before anyone was reporting that MJ was in the hospital and/or dead:

"Hey, you know how celebrity deaths happen in 3's? I'll bet you the next one to go will be either Elizabeth Taylor or Michael Jackson."

I sh*t you not. The rest of us thought he was nuts for suggesting the 50 year-old MJ, but Taylor was not a stretch of course.

Anyhoo, I live in a Powerball state so I promptly had the guy write down some lotto numbers for me when I saw him later today after MJ was dead. He looked seriously spooked by his own premonition.

R.I.P. MJ... Just make sure you stay at least 100 yards away from Cherub School.

They DO come in 3's guys, and plus you've all got the order all wrong in terms of importance:

    1) BILLY MAYS (RIP world's greatest TV marketer)
    2) Micheal Jackson
    3) Farrah Fawcett

    "Hot Marketing"?

Interesting choice of words. Spreading rumors about someone's death is "hot marketing"...hmmmm...learn something new every day.

Agreed Alice. Thanks for saying so.

There are some times (many times, actually) that we don't cross a certain boundary.

Alice, I think you know what I was getting at by referring to Hot Marketing.

I do not believe I said the lesson to be learned was to spread false rumors.

But it was one of those things where I read the story, it was interesting, and instead of moving on to the next oddball story I stepped back, put on my marketing hat, and thought: why did something this stupid go viral so fast?

Sort of like, what makes something 'diggable'?

Whoever that idiot was, they managed to get themselves a lot of traffic. Now, if that can be properly channeled we're talking some traffic.

Interesting thing. After writing that post I did sit down for a few minutes and contemplate what had happened. Then I went and bought a domain and tried an angle. I've made some money. Got a boatload of traffic. And learned a lot - much more than I expected.

Not really. I wouldn't use the words "hot" or "marketing" to describe what was done. I don't put "my marketing hat on" for people who use cheap and distasteful tactics to get attention. But that's just me...clearly, many see it differently.

          Sorry. :-(

I read somewhere that amazon is all sold out of MJ albums, and his songs are ranking for like every one of the top 10 songs on itunes. Too bad hes not around to make all the money his empire is generating right now.

Its crazy that Billy Mays died, one of the greatest marketers of all time.

That spread so fast and to reputable sites because a retard entertainment reporter announced it on the Australian Today Show to a national audience. He obviously was despo for a scoop and didnt do his homework, thus later coming back to kill his reputation.
