Have you written a physical book?

On numerous occasions I've read articles or heard people talk about using their physical book for a variety or marketing projects. I've heard several times that these folks are getting their short, lead generation books for about $1 a copy.

I've looked all over for book quotes. The cheapest I've been able to find has been $1.50 for a 100 page book in quantities of about 2000. Does anyone know of a good spot for book printing that could get those costs down more?

Thanks

I'm certainly not the authority on this subject... but when I published books and needed physical copies I've always used Lulu for print-on-demand.

I understand you are looking for a large quantity though... Can you explain why (ie an in-person event, etc)? Rather than waiting to print once purchased online through Amazon, etc.?

They are dog training books. I'm going to give them away to veterinarian offices for them to either give away or resell, if they'd like and keep the profits.

I'm not going to put it up for sale anywhere.

Yes, I have a "hard copy" book out. I use Create Space. Whether that's the best way or not..... who knows?

That's my way, albiet I'm not a publishing expert by any means and that's not the topic of my book

Have you considered other publication forms?

      Tabloid
      Mini-tabloid
Newsprint - by the way, change the paper quality for the books you are printing.

You need to talk with your printer - basically get him/her to do the job for $1 a book.
They'll know what to do - I know, because I was a printer and book publisher (as well as being an author and newspaper publisher).

Can you make a regular book using newsprint quality paper?

Books can be made out of leaves and cloth.
Book binders bind. The type of binding differs by price and material being bound.

The question though is what type of "book" fulfills your marketing strategy.
If a self-cover (same paper inside is your cover) does not distract from you gaining leads and budget is a concern, then this is the way to go.

If you are branding high-end services, then I'd stay with the utmost quality in all facets of this project - but you also will need a high-end budget.

There are also other alternatives that accomplish the same thing and don't involve a physical book. Is a book essential to your brand? is it essential to your target market? Can't you accomplish the same using QR code to a phone app / pdf download? This way all you pay for is postcard printing!

            Ty,

In the book publishing business, 2000 copies is a relatively small print run. To get the cost down, you'd have to print 10000 copies.

In offset printing, the main costs are the labor of setup and paper.

It would be much more economical to print more copies at once if you believe you will need them eventually.

And ignore the suggestions for CreateSpace and Lulu. Their costs are stratospheric compared to offset printing in the quantities you are talking about.

Just one more suggestion. Talk to your local printers, including the company that prints your local newspaper. They might have excess capacity and be willing to make a one-time deal with you just to keep their press busy during a slow time.

Getting your book printed will cost you unless you print in large quantities. What if you converted it to an app or an ebook? Then you could simply print out postcards with the app or digital book information and give that to the vets to give to their clients. Of course within the app would be a link to your website.

I feel like publishing a book is great, but going through the simpler system of going through Kindle on Amazon is great for getting your fee wet and getting started.

      Getting started with what?

I'm not getting started. I've had a business for 8 years now, 7 employees, a physical location, etc., etc.

If you'll read the post you'll see that I'm looking for physical books that I can give away for lead gen. I'm not interested in giving away a code for a downloadable book.

You should promote a CPA offer that pays $1.00 and write the book after the money is coming in.

What has happened to this forum?

Why bother even responding if you're going to get so off topic?

I'm not interested in becoming an affiliate marketer. Great business, I know.

I'm interested in getting books printed for lead gen. If I can't get them printed for $1 I'd be interested to hear where people get their books printed at the most affordable prices.
