How do you get surveys "out there" and filled?

What is a good way to get your important survey for a new idea out there, and more importantly, get it to be filled out?
I think it's a good idea to find out what people want, and then give it to them. The only question is how do you know what people want? -- You ask them.

But how? I've created a survey for the Fitness niche,(http://budurl.com/200147) and have tweeted it, but only got 13 clicks, and no takers. (literally)

Can you let me know how you have successfully done this?

Thanks!

PPC is the fastest way to do it. Try Google Adwords, and you can even start with one of the many $50 free coupons you can find all over the net. Just Google it.

If you are looking for a FREE way to do it, I suggest Craigslist, but this isn't going to be very effective.

Either way you do it, if you want more results you are going to have to give away something for the people taking their time to fill it out. I'd suggest a quick "free" report.

    Here's what I would do.

1.) Set up the survey on your own domain. Quit using third party sites.. it instantly makes you lose credibility with your traffic.

2.) Create a free report. Something like "How To Lose 10 Pounds In 5 Days, Guaranteed!" should do the trick. It doesn't need to be long... 5-10 pages would do wonders, and you could create this in a couple of hours.

3.) Start sending traffic by using PPC or by posting ads on Craigslist. I'd post something like this in the "volunteer" section on Craigslist with ad copy that read something like "Are You Interested In Losing 10 Pounds?" and then lure them to your site by telling them you have a two minute survey about fitness, and after they fill it out they'll get a free copy of your "bestselling guide". And then leave the link to your site.

4.) After completing the survey redirect them to an opt-in for your email list. Tell them that you'll send them their free guide via email, so make sure to enter the correct email address.

5.) Don't send the guide! Instead, send them a link to another page on your site which features an upsell. This upsell can be a product you've created, an affiliate product, or even phone coaching... whatever you'd like. If they buy, you just made some cash, and got them to fill out your survey!

6.) Leave a link at the bottom of the upsell page (not in tiny print) that says "No thanks, give me my free guide".

7.) If they click that.. give them the guide.

Instead of stopping with them filling out a survey, you've now introduced them to your sales funnel. If they buy your upsell, you've made cash, on top of accomplishing your original goal.

And let's not forget... now you've got them on a list. You may be able to make cash from them in the future, or at least notify them when you launch your new site.

This may seem like a bigger process than you wanted... but this is truly how money is made online.

Dave, if you build up a list in your niche you can then
ask your subscribers sort of information they want...

Use what ever free method to start building a list of
subscribers or if you have a buyers list, just ask them
what area of the product they think needs more info
on and you just create it...

I've asked my list what they want and have create
product for them it is awesome...

    Bryan,

Thanks for that great post. I don't have a list, I don't have an upsell, I don't have a funnel. But I want one, and the first step is to find out what people want. I want to truly find out what they want before creating a product that nobody wants.

I agree, giving them something for their time is best pratice, but what? A PLR product? Seems fair.

Hosting a survey on my own domain is good too. However, I don't do PPC, and already have accounts with G,Y, and MS, so I don't qualify for freebies.

    Good tips anyhow.

Dave, same thing. Good to have a list, but you need to start one first.

You start a list by giving away something valuable. I know that you want to find out what people find the most value in, but you have to have something to give them to even get them into your funnel.

Seriously, write an easy 5 page report, try my steps above, and you'll be amazed. I've done this in several dozen niches, and I quit my day job within three months (over two years ago).

Better than a five page report is to use your pc audio or video
with powerpoint and record your product that is easy to do or
interview someone that is an expert in your niche, that is great
        content right there man...

Within hrs you could have 2 product ready to go man...

This stuff isn't hard we just try to make things complicated
        for ourselves...

Does the free report/audio have to be in the same niche as your survey?

It should be I think you asked them what they needed
then you should comply and give them what they want...

As for creating a lead in product it could be just audios
and upsell could be pdf + videos...

This is actually a great idea... even though it sounds so simple. But a lot of times offering the same idea in different formats gets people going. For example, a how-to PDF is the freebie, the upsell is a video of someone actually doing all the steps visually, and an audio interview of someone who's already done it. Definitely adds value.

Plus the prospect has already accepted that the freebie has value that they want by starting to download it - it's only a small step beyond that to wanting the rest of the package.

If you're in the IM niche and you have the rights to do so, offering the PDF and upselling the PLR/MRR rights to it is also something I see a *lot* of people doing (in fact I recently read a whole system wherein the foundation consisted of exactly this idea).

So I'd say you're definitely on to something with that.

Well, I don't have a lot of access to free reports in this area, but I have bought some products that have some PLR pdfs in them.

If I want to get people to fill out a survey about IM, mostly newbies, then what would be a good thankyou PDF? Something in the IM niche, I am sure, and something that *i* have rights to give away.

But should I get the branding option of said product? What about offering the same PLR articles/PDF's that I have access too (that I paid for in another product) ?

          Thanks for your time.

Here is the survey I am working on. I haven't made it clickable, as it's not ready for someone to submit, as the submit.php file hasn't been made: http://Step1ne.com. I really like the domain name!

EDIT: It's live right now. I just don't have a funnel.
