How to hire App Developer?

What is the best way to go about hiring someone to develop my App and making sure I ask the right questions, establish requirements and deliverables to be sure I don't get hosed with unexpected charges?
Thanks so much for any direction you can give.

If you hire off of any freelance site it is not a good idea to ever go with the cheapest bit, especially for programming. Pick someone who has many good reviews and charges a real fee, you will get what you pay for.

      Hi
When hiring an app developer you need to look at his/her work experience it does not matter if he/she is working with an agency or a freelancer. Hiring an app development company service and hiring a free lancer have their own pros and cons. The best way to find a good app developer you need to search for your self visit app development companies and have meeting with them until you find a best service provider the same applies on the freelancer but we mostly search online website like odesk, freelancers and there the candidate with the highest positive reviews by clients are best to choose.

I somewhat agree with him. If you want to create a high quality app, don't use freelancer.
I tried hiring several "apps developers" from Freelancer and ODesk, no one really understand what kind of app I want to make.

Use freelancer only if 1) the app is easily described or there are already apps that has similar functionality with yours, 2) you don't care about user interface and user experience.

But of course there are good freelancers too.

Considering English doesn't seem to be your first language despite your English sounding name, I am not surprised you have had a hard time finding people who understand what you want, your grammar is terrible. Not just in your post, but in your signature and on your landing page as well.

    nnyorker,

Contrary to "popular belief," there is no "quick and easy way" to comprehensively walk through the process of outsourcing software...

One of the biggest mistakes is.... People incorrectly assume software is like digging a ditch... It is done or not done....

    The problem is.....

The maintenance cost of software of any magnitude is several times the initial cost of Development.... If you hire cheap Developers, you'll have several long term problems including high maintenance cost...

I go into this in detail in my Warrior Forum Blog post... The topic is Web Development... But, most of it applies to Mobile Apps as well.

    All The Best,

    Rich Beck BCIP, MCSD, MCIS

You can also hire from oDesk, elance and freelancer. You just join and post the job and hire an expert for cheap price. In elance & freelancer you will get qualified and highly skilled app developer

If you want quality work you need to get first professional graphic designer after that professional programmer. There are tons of cheap designers I wouldn't recommend you. If you're serious about business go for something professional. Elance is among this the best choice.

I worked often on sites like odesk or freelancer, most people are not really expert as you believe, you also need to make sure that these, once entrusted with the project, meet the due date.

Often tell you a date, but then do not respect it, also often do not even read what you write in your project, then i advise you to include in your project a phrase like: "Write I am an expert app developer and i want to work with you when i'll contact you "So you'll know who have read your project.

Always look at his feedback, and let him specific questions, and see how he'll respond you, otherwise entrusted to real agencies to don't waste your time if anyone of them doesn't understand exactly what you want.

Personally, I have always achieved great results using Odesk - Elance - Freelancer.

If you want great results, do not settle for cheaper offer.

It is really important to select the right freelancer!

If the project is important and the budget is not a problem, do not entrust the project to those who have no feedback.

Read the ratings of the candidates, look great feedback for projects similar to yours.

It is important not to save money, but simply to rely on a true professional.

P.S. It is good to entrust projects with agencies or a team, never a single programmer!

Have you thought of using an app builder and making it your self? This way you would be in control of how it turns out. I use one called createcoolapps which is actually sold on this forum somewhere. Its very affordable and has some very advanced features, its actully a white label version of Seattle Clouds. You could build your app in just a few hours once you have learnt how to use the builder.

      Hope this helps

We have a couple of apps in the Apple marketplace

    Postal Pete
    Fizz Factory

We hired freelancers for both projects

My advice after experiencing this first hand is to..

    1. make sure the service you use has escrow so your payments are protected until you are satisfied
    2. create a small milestone first $50-$100 and have them complete it as as test
    3. don't pick freelancers that take a long time to respond after you send them questions
    4. have a nice doc prepared to clearly outline what you are looking to build and make them sign a non disclosure agreement (NDA)
    5. post your project with sealed bidding so other freelancers cannot see the other bid prices
    6. make sure the freelancer has at least 20 feedback scores that are near perfect (4 and 5 stars)

i could literally add 20 more things but these 6 are very important. we've had a lot of success with both agencies and individual freelancers. for us we've found that making sure they are held accountable seems to yield the best results

so that means making sure you never do work outside of an escrow account or where you cannot leave feedback for their work. when you take away accountability you lose your leverage and open yourself up to being ripped off

You have to know the basics of app development and how the whole process works before hiring a developer. Also hiring an awesome graphics designer is must.

I would suggest locating someone (who know a lot about apps) to hire the people for you.

In the past, I had gotten good developers for a small fee. My background is in IT so I had no problem hiring people with no reviews, single freelancers, etc. This was for areas that I based my career on (back-end development, databases, servers, etc) - so - again - no problems in this area.

I had ~big time~ problems in the front-end area (HTML, CSS, javascript, etc.) - so much to the point where I had to learn it myself. The reason why I had so many problems was because I did not have experience in that area. Nowadays, they want more money with an average (or below average) skill set.

Again, my vote would be to find a techie with a ~good solid background~ and let him/her manage the development. I have seen it over and over. Non-tech folks hiring tech folks means a lot of wasted money and the probability of getting an Obamacare website.

Focus on these right aspects while choosing the right app developer :-

    1. Look for a developer interested in your business, not just the development.
    2. Assess their portfolio
    3. Check client references
    4. Choose someone you can build a relationship with
    5. Don't let price drive you
    6. Think of the whole package, not just the coding
    7. Make design a top priority
