Forget About Becoming A Guru. Become A TRIBAL CHIEF

We often talk about extremely successful internet marketers as being GURUS. We talk about them with a sense of humor, we talk down on them, we envy them, we want to become one preferbly.Because being a GURU=MONEY.

The word Guru is often used in sales pages, squeeze pages, thank you pages. The word itself has become a noun with a double meaning, but still most people that are new to the internet marketing world, or even been into internet marketing for quite some years, want to become one.
And while most strive to become a Guru, others hate te be one.

It's not strange that the actual people that are being labeled as a Guru, hate this title. Afterall, in the way this word has been used, it makes it seem like being a Guru is easy. You hit gold once and you're set for life. This couldn't be further from the truth. If it's so easy to become a Guru, why is the wso section of this forum is getting overcrowded?

Personally, I don't like the title and I don't envy anyone that has been labeled as such. Instead, I would like to introduce a more positive title to those that have worked their ass off to make it in the IM industry:

Tribal Chief

A tribal chief is a leader of a loyal following who's main goal is to inspire and teach his or her following how to reach their personal goals in the best way he/she can. A Tribal Chief cares about their customers and his or her reputation and won't throw out products to make a quick buck, just becasue he/she can.

Sounds good, doesn't it?

In all fairness, most Gurus have the exact same discipline. It's us that have changed the discipline, the belief, the title and have used it incorrectly.

If you want to become a Guru, I suggest you consider becoming a Tribal Chief instead. THIS is what being sucessful in the internet marketing industry is all about: To be professional and to care enough about your customers as much as your own reputation. Instead of trying to get your piece of the moolah pie a couple of times, or even once, think about what you want to achieve. Do you want to build a business or do you want to make a quick buck?

If you want build a business, it's imperative to become
a Tribal Chief!

No thanks. Tribes are too local and limited . I am much more ambitious.

      I seek world domination.

Your tribe can pay me protection money

My tribe would not pay you protection money, since they would be loyal to me because I treat them right. That's the point here. I rather have 1000 motivated loyal people in my tribe, for example, than have the entire world population on my list, ready to abandon me every single time something shiny comes along, because I can't give them the attention they WANT from me. (if you catch my drift).

Having a group of loyal people around you will make you more money, since they KNOW you, TRUST you and therefore BUY from you time and time again. If you get in over your head, you will lose money.

          So, world domination? Nah. Thanks!

To my way of thinking, the problem is not in the term that is used to describe a marketer. To be honest, I could care less about titles or names. They are not important to your marketing.

Both terms, guru and chief, suggest that the marketer has somehow been through a coronation to rule over his audience. Often when that crown is worn, the head starts to enlarge and the ego expands.

What's even worse is when the title is presumed, self-appointed, used by a marketer to apparently elevate himself above his clientele. You see it all the time in the avatars, the sig files, and the sales offers - Joe Schmoe, the King of ___insert niche here___ .

Isn't becoming an authority, a teacher, and a helper in your niche a more realistic and less presumptive goal? It suggests your purpose is to stand along side your subscribers and potential customers to assist them in the niche.

BTW, the reference to tribes, clans, and families has been around for at least 15 years.

It is what it is: a word.

Guru or tribal chief, at the end of the day the only thing that matters is that you provided value for your audience. If i can do that everyday they can call me whatever they want.
