Direct sales isn't dead, at least not in regards to peddling wares and services door-to-door. I've constantly got people knocking on my door selling everything from carpet cleaning services and vacuum cleaners to magazines and bug control services. If it wasn't working, I wouldn't be seeing the same companies canvassing the neighborhood day after day, year after year.

As far as direct sales online goes, isn't that what most of Internet Marketing is? We're putting ads out there fishing for customers to find them in hopes they'll click through to our sites and read our sales pitch. If you think about it, that isn't all that different from going door to door knocking and hoping to find a paying customer. Of course, we're able to target our ads a little better than the people who are blindly knocking on doors. Well, some of us are, anyway.

Wouldn't something need to be commonly discussed or believed before it
can actually be classified as a myth? Before opening this thread I've never
seen or heard a single soul say that sales and marketing are dead.

If I ever did see or hear anyone say such a preposterous thing I'd shake my
head and walk away.... knowing that they were looney... or positing a ridiculous
theory for the purpose of trying to sell me something... lol

The day sales and marketing die will be the day the Earth grinds to a halt.

Direct sales will never die, many customers still want to hold the item in their hand and test it out before they buy.

Sales is never dead. Ever. And never will be. Here's how I see sales and how far selling goes:
      • If you're married.. you had to sell the ability to be the best person for your significant other. Otherwise you wouldn't be married.
      • All services are sales in the making.. A restaurant sells you good service and food.
      • Children... they cry and whine and beg and are very persistent when they want something. They are selling to you.
      • I want to buy Cutco knives.. A direct salesmen comes to my door (I'd never buy a $2,000 set of knives without trying them first).
      • You want grapes in the middle of winter.. Your grocery store dealt with a seller to obtain that to sell it to you.
      • People sell the idea of religion, war, education, jobs, investments, etc. to others for some kind of gain.

So you see, selling isn't always about money. It's about the transaction of goods/services between people -- and money just happens be a common denominator.

There is no way sales can die. It's in our very nature to do it.
