How to advertise my product without spending money?

18 replies
Hello everyone,

I had spent several months in developing a WordPress theme. A week ago I acquired wpforest domain for selling my theme.

But marketing isn't my strong suit. So I have no idea how to advertise my product other than spending money on CPC ads.

What are the steps you guys taken to get your initial buyers?

Thanks

    You're either going to spend money or time - choice is yours.

    But, in selling a theme - probably setting up an affiliate network would be a good way to go.

    Or go through a site like ThemeForest - that already has a large audience.

    Are you familiar with selling on Ebay? If so, you could sell there, though you might require a physical product. You could burn your product to a DVD and ship to your Ebay customer. The files would be on the DVD. This would allow you to sell to multiple people and have an instant customer base without advertising costs.

    I very much doubt people are looking on eBay for Wordpress themes so I wouldn't do that.

    You have several options. You can run a WSO in this forum. That's always a good start. You can also list your product on an affiliate network such as JVZoo and then approach product owners who have sold popular Wordpress themes and plugins in the past and convince them to do a promo for you.

    No matter what you sell, the question should always be this. Where is my typical target customer hanging out? That's where you want to be advertising.

      I agree with WIllRm especially with the introduction of warrior payments, now you can get more exposure for your themes or plugins..

        I think themeforest would be the best place to start selling.

    I suggest to submit your product in Affiliate Networks! If your Wordpress theme is really good you'll gain lots of sales. You can also sell your Wordpress them via Wordpress.org.
    Affiliate Networks(JVzoo, Warrior+ etc....)

    Thinking outside the box a bit why not contact local businesses and offer to redo their sites in your new theme!

    send a press release using free press release sites. get some JV to sell the product and you look
    after the backend and share the profit with him.

  • Well that's pretty simple. You can use sites like Craigslist, Backpage, Ebayclassifieds, Integiant, and olx.com

    Thanks guys for your suggestions. This is my theme. I'm selling it for $29.99. Its very generic theme though

    http://glassica.wpforest.com

    Do you guys think I can market that theme?

    -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
    @NatesMarketing

    Yes I have an affiliate page. Its just I don't know where to find good affiliates. I'm offering 50% commission for each sale. I think that's a fair deal.

    I applied for themeforest two years ago. They rejected my items without giving any reason. So I decided to sell it from my own site.

    -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    @Samuel Adams

    I never sold anything on ebay. So its kind of new to me.

    -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    @WillR

    I'm from India. My dumb government put so many limitations on paypal. One of the limitation is that indians not allowed to send money using paypal. However we can receive them.

    This is what JVZoo says
    "Due to PayPal limitations on your PayPal account you are not able to sell products on JVZoo.com."

    -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    @Mary Brown

    Warrior+ looks like a suitable marketplace. But the problem is, To use my theme a valid license has to be entered. I just have no idea how to overcome this issue if i'm gonna sell them using warrior+

    You have any idea?

    -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    @RickyDee

    Thats a good idea. But offline marketing is going to be more time consuming than online marketing.

    -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    @sathuri

    Can you recommend any free press release sites? Also can you explain whats the difference between JV and an Affiliate?

    -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    @ListMarketingGenius

    I'll try those sites you mentioned. But craigslist is geo specific I think. Which means you can't post ads on one country using another country IP.

    -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    @talfighel

    Agreed...

    -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    @ryan2008

    Do you know any good affiliate network that has no setup fees?

    Another place you want to sell your theme is a marketplace such as themeforest.net

    Since it is just a generic theme I'm not sure it will go sell well selling in this forum.

    The themes that seem to do best are those that are tailored to a specific need or market.

    That's okay if you invest into advertising. I like paid advertising more than free marketing. You have to look into the alternatives. But dont feel bad...or feel like spending money on advertising is maybe the (possible) equivalent of losing money. Free marketing takes alot of time. By the time your free marketing catches up to your paid advertising investment each month..... you could have been making 5-figures a month if you stuck with paid advertising alone.

      Most wp-themes available as plugins are limited editions with a paid upgrade why not use WordPress to market WordPress?

    You can also try social media. That is important for branding. My two sense.

    Social media is free to use but can be time consuming. You can get on Twitter and Facebook or have a Squidoo page.
