What's the difference between .uk and .co.uk domain names?

.uk have loads free which kind of worries me in a way. Most domains are free with the .uk extension, which seems odd?

Is .uk new or just unpopular? Or does it have some sort of negitive effect???

Thanks
Tom.

Tom, the .uk domain was just released in June this year, so it's still too early to guage the popularity. You might find that when you go to register a .uk it isn't actually available - existing owners of the equivalent .co.uk, .org.uk etc. domains have the first right to register the new extension.

Not if someone else has the .co.uk version. (But if they have, you surely wouldn't want to use the .uk one anyway? That could much too easily turn out to be similar to a non-UK site trying to building a business on a domain-name of which the .com variant already belongs to someone else? All downside, in other words. ).

Dot com(.com) refers to a commercial website. dot co (.co) would be sites at specific countries. Say co.in (India) co.uk(United Kingdom) co.nz(New zealand). For eg. www. google.com opens as Google in India.

If you are getting the dot com, you are getting the url that people can and will remember the best. The only remote exception may be charities and organisations that may use dot org, though i still think they need the dot com and use 301 to the dot org.

It doesn't have any negative effect and they both serve the same purpose. They are ccTLD domain extensions for the United Kingdom.

Ach ... they should make it clearer.

They're nice and ethical people, though, at Namecheap? They'll either refund or hold the credit for you, or whatever, if you explain?

They should refund the money in his namecheap account. I have been through similar issues.
