Impossible question to answer really as it depends…

Not all WSOs are created equal. Some are great, some awful. That
goes for both paid and free.

The results will depend on the buyer's application.

I agree but let's just assume that your product will Rock...
You have to ask yourself a question - 'What is the outcome that I want?'
      - with a paid WSO you'll grow a list of BUYERS! But just posting a new thread won't give you the results that you want - you'll need affiliates to promote it for you and you'll get them only if your offer is really good!
      - a free WSO can be something much simplier and you'll get a good number of opt-ins each time you'll bump the thread - these will be non-buyers though so you better figure out how to transform them into buyers down the road... I think that posting a free WSO is much better than buying Solo Ads for example (if you don't know from who to buy).
      Good luck

A wise man (that sold many WSOs) once told me that a good way to get more Buyers for your Free WSO is to NOT put "Free" in the subject line of the WSO.

That way, your post is not geared to the members that only look for free stuff, and the people that click your thread are more likely to be open to spending money.

I'm pretty new around here and I only have 1 WSO so far (another on the way) but this is some advice I intend to follow

Free tends to encourage time wasters.

I would go paid every time.

It all depends what you intend to do! Do you also have an strong OTO! A free high quality product would be good for list building!
Test it out and lest us know!

I do not understand your concern. Are you asking as a WSO seller or a WSO buyer's prospective?

    Agree with Will.

It's better to sell something at a low price (so you build a big buyers list) and then offer an upsell / downsell.

What do you consider "better"? Obviously you're not looking at the income from the WSO, to decide which is "better". But what are you looking at? The size of the list built?? The proportion of upsells?? The long-term future value of the subscribers???

Free is ok if you have everything automated and don't have deal with too much support. There will be buyers in there. I have had many buyers come from free stuff that have been with me for a very long time.

If you are going to offer any type support, you would be better off charging something. Like some of the others have said, people will take up your time with little thought.

Was there a policy reversal? I thought it was announced that free WSOs would no longer be allowed.

I haven't seen a rule update so this may not be set in stone as of right now. I'm sure it is coming, though.

    I say do both!

Start out with a great free wso as a way of introducing
    your to the market.

Then try a real wso for sale.

Either way, your intention should always to be to build
    a list.

It would appear from a brief glance in the WSO section that free WSOs are still alive and kicking.
I've done both, started with a free one to learn, build up a bit of credibility and start accumulating a list. Since I've released a few paid products. Hard to say how different the results were because when I started with the free product, I had no idea how to email market and am pretty sure I screwed that up royally!

I've since made that something of a personal project.
And while some say there's a massive list between building a list of buyers versus a list of people just signing up for a freebie, with a free WSO you are getting targeted subscribers interested in the MMO niche. So I vote for a hybrid approach. Start free, move to paid. Then toss in another free one every once in a while just to build up the list.

paid are usually better quality. But even the paid ones you have to watch out for money grabbers.

I've not run free WSOs, but have seen such threads. It's going to get you a lot of optins, if that's what you are after, but most of them are just looking for the free information - they won't buy from you when you send them paid products.

Based on MY personal experience, paid WSO have always performed better for ME.

As a few have said before, it really depends on what kind of offer you have and what your aim with the WSO is, but just sharing my own results
