Can a hermit make money in IM?

Can a hermit make money in IM? Someone that doesn't put their face in videos, nor reveal their name, nor goes to seminars, nor does speaking engagements, nor talks on the phone.

PS: I know hamsters can make money in IM but can a hermit?

Of course! That's the beauty of IM - almost anyone can do it.

There are advantages to meeting other people and/or branding your own name, but they certainly are not mandatory.

You'd be surprised how many people there are making big money under the radar.

I haven't done videos, gone to seminars or spoken on the phone.

I have revealed my name and a few photos though.

I know that if I did do videos, went to seminars or spoke on the phone then I would make a helluva lot more money. But I do make money and there's still plenty of room for me to grow without doing any of the above things.

Video is the next thing on the agenda. In fact I've been "rehearsing" my first ever video these last few days.

Sure, you'll just have to compensate by making better offers
than your competition who uses likability, reputation, trust,
and so forth to get traction in the marketplace.

Of course I feel you'd be cutting off your nose to spite your
face by making so many rules about what you are NOT going
to do to be successful, but if you are willing to work very hard
you could make an anonymous approach work for you. The
    porno-millionaires are invisible, for example.

People, given the choice, prefer to do business with people
they like. Do you want to fight this preference?

Ah but you can establish likability, reputation and trust without making lots of videos and public appearances, it's all about your content and style...

Take Paul Myers for example (he's on WF too, hi Paul!). It's possible he's put his photo out there on occasion, and possibly spoken at an event somewhere, but in the last few years that I've been soaking up all his good advice and commentary in his free email newsletter, and occasionally buying a product from or through him, I don't believe I've ever seen an actual photo or video of him, and don't remember ever hearing about him having a speaking engagement anywhere. But he's one of just a few IM people who I can literally count on one hand, whose emails I'll open immediately and read completely every time, instead of immediately filing them in a folder to look at someday if I happen to remember... And he's successful and has a huge list of loyal subscribers.

That's just your perception of Mr. Myers. Your perception
of what he's done to build his reputation doesn't reflect what
he has actually done - because he used to write copy for
clients and that most definitely involved networking, going
to seminars and selling on the phone.

You CAN make money in a lot of ways. You can avoid all sorts
of things and build a business however you want to - it's just
a matter of being aware that making the choice to avoid
direct-contact marketing methods (networking, speaking to
clients) has consequences and will probably limit both the
speed and extent of your success.

Read "Think and Grow Rich" - the question posed is "what are
you going to do in exchange for the money?"

        - not "what are all the things you aren't going to do in order
        to get the money?"

Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying Paul Myers is a hermit at all, I'm just saying that for me and probably thousands of others who were introduced to him without knowing his full background, he's managed to win us over as loyal fans on the basis of his written content and style, rather than by inundating us with photos, videos, his own live seminars and webinars, etc. I'm sure his past business was successful in building a large client base as you described, but I think he's also added to (and maintained) that base substantially since then by the means I described, as well as through ongoing in-person networking.

The point I was trying to make in general is that you can build a following which likes and trusts you without being there visually in front of them while you do it. Not that you have to do it that way, but you can.

You don't need to do any of the above to make money online (except maybe use a phone to conduct business).

    CPA marketing is an example.

        yeah im a hermit, lol.

Everything you mention in your first post has its place in marketing, but it depends on who you are marketing to.

If your marketing to other internet marketers, I'd say you'll increase your potential for success doing what you mention.

Put your offer on a CPA network and you can set it up some no one will ever know who you are. And if you think the affiliate marketing makes money, what do you think so of the top producing merchants are doing?

Why is it that many people think IM is only about marketing to other IM'ers?

Yes, if your product lacks value, then it's best to have a lot of other value-lacking product creators buzz your product. If your product (or your affiliate product) had value, would you need to put your ugly mug on the cover? I don't need to see Bill Gates face on the cover of Windows to know what the product is about.

Most money being made online is through transactions where the owner of the business is faceless. This is not to say that the business does not have a "face" (their brand in most cases or a spoke person). Go do a surf on the most competed niches online: How often do you see the owner of the business?... that hot chick on the splash video is not the owner!

I know a couple of nerds who are racking it in on the net while being virtual unknowns. But like Loren said, you need to compensate for it in some way. In their case, they build web applications and give them away for free attracting thousands of people every month. That's their marketing strategy. Giving away free stuff that very few people can replicate.

Absolutely. You can even make that your "hook". The shadowy, mysterious Dr. X reveals ...

In fact, the mystery surrounding your identity can be a more powerful selling tool than full disclosure. Sometimes, peoples minds will actually create a more credible background for you than you could offer yourself.

Here's an example. If I told you that I'm a fairly well-known writer across the Internet and I'm only using the pen name, "Jeff Williams" so I can quietly blend into the crowd here and not attract too much attention ... who would you think I am?

Believe me, many people would immediately think "Stephen King", "John Grisham", etc. A small legion of followers would soon appear...
