Hi,

How does amazon affiliate link works? Credit for sales?

I am having some issues related to Amazon Affiliate Links giving credit for Sales. I direct the buyer to a general category page like "Baby". I still see the affiliate link when they are in the general baby page. But when they click a item. My affiliate disappears.

I have refer hundreds of people but no sales credit.

My Test:
So I tested myself on a item. So I create an item link. Click it. Then go buy something else instead of that item that I link. I didn't get the sales credit. Seems like only get credit for the item I give the link. But if the person is on the site and buys something else I don't get the credit.

I myself do this alot also. I click a link to come to amazon buy something else because the suggested item seems better than the one I got refer to.

Can someone help me understand this?

If you refer someone to your affiliate link promoting let's say ipad and the person ended up buying a mobile phone you will be credited accordingly.

As a matter of fact, once an external visitor lands on your affiliate link it saves cookies on the visitors computer for a period of 90 days or so. What this means is, even if the visitor doesn't buy immediately and does so after 89 days you will be credited for that sale irrespective of what the affiliate link is offering.

You probably haven't got a sale maybe and you are not allowed to buy from your link.

No - I'm afraid not. Not at all.

Amazon uses 24-hour cookies. You need your prospective customer to order within 24 hours of getting cookied.

The "90-day cookies" you're thinking of apply to the situation in which the customer puts something in his "Amazon basket" within 24 hours but doesn't actually complete the order and pay until much later than that (within another 89 days). Then you're covered ... but that's for items that went into the basket within the first 24 hours of collecting your affiliate cookie.

So linking to category doesn't work? Only specific items work? Is this right? My wife buys a ton of stuff from amazon. So I am just referring her.

Stop linking to general category pages. Yeah, you can refer your visitors to any Amazon page via your affiliate links and get credit for the sale, but, apparently, it decreases conversion rates. I tested it on one of my sites and my conversion rate plummeted.

So I switched to linking to specific products I that I recommend and my conversion rate skyrocketed.

If you focus and link to a particular product then you can do a better job of the presell on your site before they click through to amazon and then they are more likely to buy.Just my opinion.

    mark.
