Is it possible to transfer site from one hosting to another?

I have a few sites hosted at Wealthy Affiliate and I was wondering if I could transfer them from there to Hostgator.

I think I've out grown WA for now and I want to move on.

Tony, as long as you have FTP access to the site, it can be moved to another host. Just download it to your desktop, set up your hosting, then upload it to the new host. You'll then need to change your nameservers at your domain registrar.

If both sites run cPanel just ask Hostgator to transfer your sites directly.

FTP will only work if the site has been created on the new host either by the host or through WHM if you have a reseller account.

Also do not immediately cancel your earlier hosting account as it takes time for the traffic to be directed to the new hosting servers. So for a while, some of your visitors will be directed to the old host and some to the new one. So do not change anything in your site layout, structure, etc until about two -three weeks till all traffic is actually directed to the new host (else customers will see two different pictures of your site depending on which host they access).

Do not use cpanel for hosting transfers!

Cpanel backup and restore is spotty, especially if you have a database of any kind.

Databases should be transferred with PHP MyAdmin only, and the rest done by FTP.

Transfers carried out through WHM will work if the site is under a certain size.

Over that size it is necessary to use the root/ssh method through WHM which definitely works well, but Hostgator will not have root access to the other server.

Otherwise, as Floyd indicated, the following method could be used:

        1. Backup your mySQL databases through cPanel
        2. Backup your home directory through cPanel
        3. Create your new site on the new server through WHM or host
        4. Restore home directory through cPanel
        5. Restore mySQL database through cPanel

Because I have my own servers, I use direct server to server transfers using SCP - Secure Copy Protocol - from the command line and then restore the databases from the command line. If it is an active site I will rsync the mySQL directory as well to ensure the data is not compromised.
