What is a good help desk program?

Zendesk software i recommend and use, depending on your budget you can recruit local or use outsourcers via freelancer,odesk,elance etc

You can either go for a subscription based service or you can install
a helpdesk script on your own site.

However, there's a new Wordpress plugin that I've just bought but I
haven't had time to install yet. One time investment...

I would prefer to use Zendesk over all other program as it's come with great features and easy to use and give enough option for you and your clients.

At my old computer job we used a help desk ticketing software called "Remedy". Very, VERY good. Zendesk is good too though. How upscale of a help desk program are you looking to have? There are many options for many different reasons/purposes. You should visit the some software sites and check out the help desk solution they use, and see if it's simple and easy enough for your prospects and customers to use.

Be careful with open source solutions for tasks such as this. You don't want to end up two years down the line using a system that isn't getting updated or supported and then have to move your whole help desk elsewhere.

Use a paid option for something as important as your helpdesk. That way you are dealing with a company that has a vested interest in supporting and updating the software.

You can't go past Zendesk.
