Hi,

What do you guys think of marketers using the term "IM Marketing"? Written out in full it is "Internet Marketing Marketing". Is this generally accepted?

Thanks,
Samy

I think most people just use it carelessly, much as some refer to "GP Practices".

If you query it, they then say something like "I mean practices where GP's work".

Similarly, in this case, they may say they meant "the online marketing of IM-related products". (And they may actually mean that, sometimes.)

Well I would just use IM. You don't want to tell people internet marketing marketing do you. IM is recognized online.

Not quite so. For some it does not stand for Internet Marketing but Instant Messaging. So unless IM Marketing would stand for Instant Messaging Marketing then it would be Mobile Marketing. Just an observation, guys.

Yeah, I would just use IM... I see it as tautology using IM Marketing!

IM or Internet Marketing are both the norm.

I.M. is jargon that everyone in this forum understands. However, I would bet that outside of this forum I.M. would mean instant messaging to most.

I.M. marketing does not go together though.

People within the industry will know what you're talking about if you use just "IM."

However, I personally prefer to use the term "online marketing" . . . there's not much confusion in anyone's mind what that means.

Yeah, I may use I.M. on this forum because most everyone knows what that means, but anywhere else I would just spell it out or say online marketing.

Sounds silly to me. Internet marketing is nothing more than any marketing of any product or service on the Internet. So, Internet Marketing Marketing doesn't even make sense.

Does this really even matter? Why did you ask this question in this section of the forum?

I think it depends on where you are utilizing it. If you are in an internet marketing forum or somewhere where IM usage is prevalent, then follow their lead. However, if you are out of industry you are probably better off just writing it out completely.

My apologies that I didn't formulate the qustion clearly. I'm looking for a short-to-the-point business name with the term IM. Since the abbreviation IM alone doesn't say much to the crowd outside of this forum I'd prefer to stick 'marketing' behind it.

I have been looking into internet marketing for over 10 years now but haven't done anything with it. I know that many established marketers still use the term "IM Marketing" therefore I think it's done on purpose and it might even be a good marketing strategy.

Words and phrases don't always necessary need to make sense once they sound catchy.....right?

Why not use MMO? Its about as obscure...

I suggest coming up with a niche in IM..... IM covers EVERYTHING from affiliate marketing to Ford Selling Cars... see what I mean.

I just say internet marketing and I'm done with it

  • It will be better that you say that in full instead of IM that will make it better for all that will be reading your profile as they will not have to think and see what that really mean. There are some that are looking for that service that is internet marketing and will only know after they have read that from you card or signature.

Thank you so much that is all I can tell as of now

    I just use the word:

    Internet marketing

That way, IM marketing does not sound weird to others.

The problem with using iMarketing is that it's Apple's trademark using the i prefix(?) in their products.
