So... what do you do?

For all of you IMers, how do you answer that question?

When I meet someone for the first time and they ask me that question..

I sell information products, like ebooks,and...
So.. you're an author? You do know it's incredibly hard to "make it".
*sigh*

I'm an Internet marketer!
Ah, are you working for some firm?
*argh*

I run an online business.
Cool! Are you with Herbalife or Amway?
*facepalm*

Just kidding, I'm actually studying to become a doctor.
Now that's more like it!

Do you struggle with the question or is it just me?

Nope, I don't struggle with this question at all.

I change lives by helping people meet needs in their life. My business is about helping people.

    Thanks!

When I was still at my traditional job and doing affiliate marketing in my spare time, I did not really feel comfortable answering that question.

But now that I am a self-employed Kindle author, I love telling people what I do!

Just tell 'em you sell porn on the internet. That'll shut 'em up and they probably think that's what you do anyway, especially if they see that you never 'go to work' and just sit at home all day, yet still have all the trappings of success.

LOL Roy that's a great idea, yeah I suspect that's what my neighbors think I do anyway, especially when they see me in my PJs at 2pm

Hilarious guys! I get the strangest looks from people driving by when I sit outside some afternoons in my PJs eating a bowl of cereal! Those strange looks amuse me.

I know some people assume the worst, but in this day of people working all 3 shifts, people should really be less surprised to find people at home during 1st shift hours. Personally, I have siblings who work 1st, 2nd, or 3rd shift, depending on their companies' needs.

I tell them I write books, sell T-Shirts and do affiliate marketing online, which is pretty much what I do. I get some strange looks from people who don't think money can be made online, but I don't really care what they think. I love my job and that's what really counts!

The people that crack me up are the ones who ask, "Did you get a real job yet?" They don't understand anything other than slaving away every day making someone else rich. It hasn't always been easy, but I'd much rather work on making myself money...

It's always a struggle for me as well to let people know what I actually do. Especially older folks for some reason. I usually go with "I use the internet to sell information people want/need".

People assume we are unemployed and don't have any work. My family members even scolded me assuming I was wasting my time in facebook chating.

Now my family members and neighbours ask me to teach how to earn money.online.

I tell people I work online, making money off of building high traffic websites and monetizing them.

That's as specific as I like to be, unless I want to sit there for an hour explaining what SEO and internet marketing is.

Try just telling them that you run a few profitable web based businesses. If you say a few, they won't be so targeted in on EXACTLY what that one thing is. Most of them are looking for an exact answer (like I sell gold online) so they can wrap their heads around it... at least for the people who don't know what IM is in the first place.
