Hosting Reseller- GODADDY VS> RACKSPACE VS. OTHERS

Good Morning warriors!!!

I am in a situation where I am building more and more wordpress sites for people. I normally tell them to buy their own domain and hosting package so everything is in their name and I don't have to deal with it .....however I find that I have to deal with all the issues anyway as I am their "web guy."

Godaddy has some re-seller white label stuff that seems interesting for both hosting and domain with their domain sister company wild west....However I heard one horror story from someone that since they use shared space if one of your client does something black hat via email they put all other domains at risk for shut down.

I am by no means an expert about this and would love to hear input. What hosting solutions do you use if you have 100 wordpress sites for very small businesses? Thanks for input!

I use KnownHost SSD VPS. Not a "reseller" account (but I use it like that), it works for me and their servers and support are the best, imo. Wired Tree is similar and a good one too.

I strongly suggest WiredTree. Get a PureSSD VPS for $55/month, and gradually migrate all of your sites to it. They'll even do that part for you, all included.

It is a no-brainer to pass that cost (plus a decent profit margin) off to your clients.

And you'll love the product plus support you'll get there.

It is scary, I understand that. I was scared 5 years ago when I made the leap for my business.

I had actually done it once, years before, for a different business. So it wasn't entirely new to me.

But still, this was a new business, I was just starting to make a little money, and it was hard to go from cheap shared hosting to a real stable platform that was mine.

Actually, 5 years ago I made a bad decision. I went with a company that had some good reviews, but shortly after I got my stuff migrated there they imploded and I was quickly left exposed and underprepared.

So I spent a sleepless night doing much more in-depth research.

WiredTree was a leading contender. I gave them a call at about 3 in the morning, just to put their 24/7 phone support claim to the test. They passed. I ended up having a really good conversation with a clearly competent English-speaking technician who put my mind at ease with the idea of using their company.

The next day, I got myself a dedicated server with them, and let them move all of my stuff over to it.

    Best decision I ever made.

They are located in Chicago, and when I visit Chicago on business periodically I make sure to stop at their offices and thank them in person for the great work they do. The management there knows me pretty well by now (after 5 years of helping me do some crazy things, like optimize a server for my b2b service that processes *billions* of searches a year for my clients).

They even took me to the highly secured data center once so I could visit my server in person (which, by the way, is not something I believe they would do for most people..).

    That was an emotional experience.

They have been a great partner in every way. I wouldn't go out of my way to praise most of my vendors like this, but for these guys I do. I know I can count on them to go above and beyond for me, literally any time that I need them.

Of the choices you gave, RackSpace is very good, and I would definitely take that over GoDaddy. There are many choices out there. RackSpace is a great place to start.

I have worked with Rackspace before as well. I have nothing bad to say about them. The only reason I didn't go with them again (5 years ago) is that they did not support WHM/cPanel.

    That may be different now.

I'm using HostNurse and I have been happy with them. I used to be with HostGator, but left them when the support and services have deteriorated dramatically.

    Mcangelo4,

Thanks for taking the time to post your concerns. To clarify how our process works I give some examples. First, these same scenarios apply to both Reseller and GoDaddy accounts. If you're hosting multiple sites and/or clients on a SINGLE hosting plan then they are all at risk for takedown if one person does something warranting a take down. For example, say you purchased cPanel deluxe and added 5 sites on alias domains. If one of those sites hosts illegal content, all 5 would be taken down because they represent one cPanel account. If you were to purchase 5 individual cPanel hosting plans, each client on their own, then only the one hosting plan that has illegal content will be taken down. The others remain untouched since those plans are not related, except that they all reside in the same GoDaddy account overall. So this would be something you need to consider when setting up your accounts for clients. Is it adventitious to have them all separate at a little more cost, or on one ship together to get more savings?

The exception to this rule is on our Managed WordPress platform. When you buy higher plan levels, each of the Managed Word Press accounts is stood up as a separate Wordpress instance (not sub sites and not using WordPress MU). In this case, we should be able to take down a specific sub-site of your one hosting plan.

With all the being said, we are working on a new program and I think you'd be a great fit for it. We would love to get your feedback on this new idea. We'd also love to just chat and learn more about your business. If you can drop me an email at cvilla@GoDaddy.com, include your main GD account info, I'll be more than happy to get you set up as an Alpha user. All that we ask is that you give us more great feedback
