Where should I start?

Hi All
My first post, I've been busy building stuff for the last year or so, and now I need to turn my silent business into one which pays hence why I've signed up here

I have been writing software and websites/services relating to ID cards, having built some useful stuff I will be able to use in a number of ways, but I don't think marketing comes naturally to me (good job I'm a damned hard worker, then)

One website I put together is this - Your ICE Card | Home

The only thing I have done before now is run a Google ads campaign. I paid about £10 a day and sold around one card per day, so I gave it up after a week or so - that was a few weeks ago.

My question to you learned people is, how should I best promote a site like this? I really have no idea, I have been reading a few articles on this site and somebody mentioned that Bing PPC is cheaper than Google, might this be the way forward? How would you Warriors promote a site like this (or would you put it in the bin?)

Thanks in advance for replies

  • before getting traffic make sure you setup a split test for the page. You'[d be wasting the traffic you buy if you don't.

I agree with you! With split testing you avoid wasting traffic and you can easily increase your conversion rate.

        Brilliant, thanks
The original advert pointed to the homepage, I'm learning that this is a no-no (oops)

Today I have started on a bit of code which will handle the serving of split page whilst recording onto a database (SQL express), I'll create an article on my website then come back here with a link to it, just in case anyone here is hosting on IIS or using C#, VB for their sites. I'll incorporate trapping of email address too

        I'll be back, thanks again!

Just checked your website. I think your website design and product is cool.

    Well...my thoughts?

I think what you're selling can be best promoted using inbound marketing tactics.

    But...there's a warning sign.

I discovered you're using ICE (Internal Currency Exchange) in your domain name.

This company www.iceplc.com has the rights to that name.

That's very dangerous as this company can sue you for copyright infringement.

When doing Internet marketing, the rule is you should never use any registered company name within your domain name.

I strongly advice you drop that domain and come up with something that don't relate with any company.

    Now back to your question.

Blogging about health issues that requires expensive treatment charge can trigger more people to buy your cards. You can also expand on this business model so your income is not only limited to selling cards.

Actually ICE is used by first responders (fire, police and paramedics ) and hospitals to identify you when something happens to you and you can't help yourself. It's what is recommended to be in your phone so your in case of an emergency contacts can be reached along with any details of your condition might be.
This concept has been identified and spread in first aid classes, schools and at the fire prevention convention years ago. So please know the rules better. ICE is not infringing. It's not even related. One is for actual help the other is financial.regardless of the domain name the companies are not related. In my opinion they are doing nothing wrong and should leave their name as is. They are trying to save lives and you want to challenge that, really? I hope they go global with their site and cards. Oh by the way my dad's a fire chief. Get this on the boards for fire prevention week (it's not just about fire) anything health related. If you want any help pm me.

It's all about marketing and how you come across. Split test everything and build a high converting squeeze page to capture those leads. Use all social media traffic sources. For $5 you can get someone to send 150 quality social media links out there

A/B test your pages first to ensure a high conversion rate.
    Then pump in traffic.
You can also use social media to get the word out.

Find out where your audience is and who needs it the most.
I assume you should target an older generation as they are more vulnerable to health issues?

You should have a professionally designed theme as well targeted to your audience.

I mean why can't people just write it on a piece of card and stick it in their wallet?
Why do people have to buy your version?

Think of a Unique Selling Point

Thanks to all replies, very useful indeed

I've built my split tester now so I can serve up different pages in any proportion I need, is 50/50 the way to do it? Then I presume I whip out the lower (performing) one, keep the good one and then try improve further in pairs, always disposing of the poorer performer and so forth until the return is high enough to justify putting decent money in?

This website or its product isn't something I want to spend time promoting full time, I've had a good read up on Inbound Marketing (I'm really enjoying learning this stuff - thanks goes to michakins) - I put this website together in around a day because I already have the code to do it - and I want to use it to cut my teeth on advertising so I can go from Worrier to Warrior ;-)

I do have a couple of USPs on my main business, haven't got round to marketing that yet either, but what I learn from these smaller projects I hope to carry into that in the coming weeks.

I'll wrap up the code I wrote today and post an article about it, think I've seen a section on coding in the main menu - I'll place it there

Thanks again, think you guys and gals are brill, this has quickly become my forum of choice!

Just as every other said, you need to split test your landing page and your ad copy. When testing, do it on a small scale and when you find a winning winning ad copy and landing page, then you can scale like mad.

If you do not test, you will be a wasting a whole lot of money. Testing is the key to a successful ad campaign

read warrior forum, implement, fail a bit, read warrior forum, implement make some money, cheer, come back and read warrior forum and implement and upscale your techniquies, make big money, quit job.

It should go something like that.

however few people get to the STEP 2 or IMPLEMENT stage.

Promoting online generally means building back links to your website and thus increasing your website online visibility and this include advertising as well such as banner or text link advertising.

You can start by submitting your website to related directories, post on blogs, forums, social sites, etc.

If I were you... I'd promote this is every forum/community that has anything even slighty to do with health and well-being - whether it's a place people talk about thier medical conditions or a places where people talk about other peoples conditions or a place where people learn how to live healthier.

You'd be suprised at the percentage of the population who would want one of these cards.

Just my 2cents, spend it wisely,
    Peace Gh0zt.
