Why You Can't Make Money BLOGGING

It's proven. NOBODY makes any money BLOGGING

people don't make money "facebooking"... "emailing" or "SEOing" either.

"article posting" in and of itself doesn't pay any money, either.

The only way to make money is by SELLING.

You need to set out from the very beginning with the goal of selling something.

You identify your market. What market do you WANT to go into? Juicing? Okay.....

Look for keywords being searched for that indicate a demand for juicing information. Keywords like...how-to.... how do I..... juicing videos....... juicing ebooks etc.

Find those? Cool. Now.....

Look for products in the juicing space. If they exist...... great. You've proven your market (sort of).

Now look for BLOGS and forums in that space. Are there article posting opportunities? Advertising opportunities? JV opportunities?

IF YOUR CHOSEN MARKET PASSES THAT LITMUS TEST...... START A BLOG.

Start a BLOG to SELL.

Create a FREEBIE of some kind related to juicing (or your chosen market).

Load it into an auto-responder.

Load that same auto-responder with a "newsletter" series about juicing.

Publish the optin-box and ad for your freebie on your BLOG.

Create a Facebook Fan page for your new BLOG.

Add some articles to your BLOG..... one a day for 30 days.

Everytime you post an article to your BLOG..... post about it on your FB fan page.

Use Facebook PPC ads to get some fan page likes. As you post to your BLOG and post to your Fanpage, your BLOG gets traffic.

As your BLOG gets traffic..... you'll build a list with your FREEBIE.

It's to that LIST...... that you'll innitially sell your paid stuff and yes, as your BLOG grows, advertise your own stuff there obviously.

That's Marketing and MARKETING MAKES MONEY...... not BLOGGING.

Here's where someone throws you under the bus.

You CAN make money by BLOGGING.

How you monetize your blog is a whole other ball of wax.

    Content is king.

I don't blog for the sake of making money.

I blog for the sake of providing VALUABLE CONTENT, which will draw readers in to learn something they might not know.

Readers will be drawn in by CONTENT - not me trying to sell them something.

Now, if what I'm discussing can be accomplished by some particular method or device, then they will follow suit.

For example - Let's say I have a blog about cooking.

And I mention that I use a kitchen-aid mixer and it is the best for what I'm making.

And I am confident, and transparent, and mention that my proceeding with providing good recipes is reliant on those who support me and order through my links on my site - there is a TRUST built. And there are those who will follow my suggestions.

I agree, the goal is to SELL but a bigger goal is to provide TRUST, TRANSPARENCY, GOOD SERVICE, GOOD CONTENT, EDUCATION, ENTERTAINMENT, and most of all providing excellent value and adding a positive experience to the internet.

Now why would I join the HATERS CLUB of someone who made such a valuable contribution to this post?

I agree with what you're saying about CONTENT.

Perhaps this is one of those times when I did a less than perfect job getting my point out.

I'm intending to point out the "marketing point".

Obviously, as you stated, quality and VALUE also are important, too. Anyone who knows me knows that I agree with you.

I agree at some point something needs to be sold. Could be ad space, could be a physical item or an ebook or software. Or as mentioned building a list to promote things to.

I like to think of monetizing as opposed to selling.

There are a lot of ways to monetize a blog.

I do think that there is a euphoria accomplished when you don't even feel like you are trying to sell - but when you are immersed in a product that you are truly excited about and you are sharing that excitement with others on how that thing has simplified your own life.

It shouldn't feel like work of any sort. Not saying that work isn't involved in any kind to build the blog itself, or gather the right content.

I do agree with you too that before starting a blog about any random thing that you want to talk about (if your intent is to eventually make some money back for your efforts) that some research should be conducted first.

I suppose you can gen some green... if you slap on some sad sense. However, you make only pennies. That said, promoting product as an affiliate is a lot better because you get paid some commission. Still, it is a small percentage and having your own product is the best way.

    What about display ads?

Huffington Post doesn't sell anything except the opportunity for other companies to sell something via ads.

I get your point, and arguably selling ad space is selling. However, I think it's worthwhile pointing out that you don't have to sell an info product or a physical product to make a living online. If you get traffic to a website, you can make money not selling anything. Traffic alone is an asset (although some traffic is more valuable than other types of traffic).

Some people prefer creating a great website that attracts people and not worry about having to sell anything so they monetize with ads. In fact, many websites' best monetization option is ads.

Well, technically BOTH of you are right and wrong.

    I will explain.

Jill - Technically speaking, you don't make money blogging. You create relationship with your readers through your blog. It's like making friends in the park! But to make money off your friends, you NEED to sell 'something' to them, right?

So, NO...only informational content does not make someone pay you money. You need to be selling! That's where the OP was right.

Now onto the OP - While you are right about the fact that we make money by selling and NOT blogging, emailing or FB'ing, you are still not clear about the basic concept of selling and marketing.

Selling follows marketing, and marketing may not directly make you money. To add to that, blogging is a form of marketing!

So, coming back to our age-old question, what makes us money?

    Creating value.

If you can create new value, you can make money.

Now, the meaning of "value" can be very tricky and even a whole management class at Wharton School of Business might not be able to teach you that.

So, for any budding entrepreneur, my advice is, "Look for opportunities to give something that no one gives, and people will pay money in exchange of that."

Ha. I may be the exception.

I subcontract for a local company - who pays me for my time be it blogging for them or managing some technical stuff.

As pointed out above in another post, if you are simply using your site and monetizing with something like adsense, then the only way you are going to make money is by blogging.

Money can be made by guest blogging too.

So, coming back to our age-old question, what makes us money?

      Creating value.

If you can create new value, you can make money.
Perhaps you missed my second post where I covered just that.

If your blogging is creating a valuable website which can be sold to someone who may have other/better ideas on how to monetize it, then you've just made some money by blogging.

If someone pays you outright to be blogging for them, then you are making money blogging.

Some reviewers are handed products in hopes they will write a nice blog post about them. So the blogger is being compensated for their time = making money blogging.

See this thread as "you can make money doing anything on the Internet like blogging, facebooking, SEOing, article writing or emailing" because selling is always along with all the activity that you use to perform on the daily basis.

Just focus on the product or service that goes with a right price tag according to the value enacted inside.

I too prefer to think of it as monetizing. And if you want to say that any form of monetizing includes selling, fine. But then don't forget...if you work for someone else, to earn a paycheck you have to sell your time. So how broadly do we want to define selling?

And as for content, it doesn't seem that quality is necessary anymore when it comes to making money. All it has to do is be in demand. Just look at some of the YouTube channels with huge subscriber bases. With the adaptation of social media I can't help but wish we still had the old Marketing To The Herd Mind sub forum. There would be some excellent case studies and discussions in there. Sure, some may say in demand = quality. But then again, how broadly do we want to define quality?

Agreed, but if I walk around and call everyone out on that I'd probably be banned quickly.

Further more, I might suggest that the titles are meant purely to pull question/answer traffic out of the SERPS.

      At times, I'm disgusted....

LOL. Not 120,845, but 120,846, and they are targeted, for any site, in any niche. My newest niche is sales of air conditioners during the winter months in North Pole, Alaska, population 2117.

But seriously, It is a good point about having a strategic plan and not thinking you are going to write blog posts about whatever is happening and expect money to flow in. That's what Facebook feeds for family and friends are for.

Lot's of talk on how to make here and there.

You can make money on anything. Period!

You can make money on blogging, list building, email
    marketing, youtube, photography, dancing, anything!

Everyone in here makes it all complicated. Want to make money then
    sell something of VALUE.

Know how to dance, then sell dancing lessons. Know how to blog then
    write something and sell ads.

Problem with people is they don't believe in themselves. Everyone can sell
anything. Everything is right in front of you! It's all about market perception!

If your main goal with your blog is to make money off it, then the OP is correct.

I know first hard: I used to run a 5-figures-per-month blog quite some years ago, and I only started making serious money off time when I stopped blogging for the sole point of "sharing ideas with my audience" and I started blogging with a marketing purpose in mind: building a list, linking back to my products, promoting products via reviews, signing people to webinars, etc.

Even blogging to sell ad space in your own blog is still selling.

In this time and age, in order to make money someone needs to swing a credit card at some point down the funnel, and that only happens when you blog to market, not when you blog just to "communicate".

All the around about ways of selling, such as blogging won't sell anything. If you want someone to buy your product online, you have to personally recommend it, stand behind that product and say, "Buy this!" and then tell the person reading why that product is right for their needs. And, this is true of offline sales. So many people online providing great info that is taken by the reader for free and it never leads anywhere. To earn money online you have to close the sale. And, that means asking the person to buy.
