Not Making Much $ from 10k uniques/day

by bb255

My site gets around 9,000 unique visitors/day & around 20,000 pageviews/day but my earnings are well under $100/day from it. I had been using Adsense for over 2 years on the site before just recently switching to Sovrn (Adsense as backfill). That increased revenue a little bit but I'm still making well under $100/day. I know a guy who runs a similar website with slightly higher pageviews/day that's making ~$175/day with ads. What could I be doing wrong? I've tested all different ad spots, color change, blocking irrelevant ads, etc etc. but still get really low CPC/CTR rates.

Any advice would be great! Thanks

Well it sounds like you're doing a lot better than the other guy?

I'm not sure what your website is but frankly, the nature of some websites is a natural limiter of CTR. If it's an information website for example, people are less inclined to part with their money because they're not in the right mindset. If all your content is information based, that's great but it means people are on your page to read and learn rather than spend. Do you do split testing with your website?

Oops, I meant $175/day, not per month.

It's an entertainment website & yes, I have done A/B testing with the ad units. I just feel like I've tried everything there is to try within Adsense & ads in general, so I just wanted to see if anyone can point something out that I haven't thought of.

I have to agree with ilee - without knowing what your website is about and the type of visitors you have - it's going to be hard to tell.

Maybe your site doesn't work well with Adsense type ads, but some affiliate product placements may perform wonderfully.

  • It is hard to tell unless we get a better understanding your site.

But I would say to monetize outside of ad revenue.

Try utilizing the power of selling Clickbank products, CPA marketing, and anything similar to utilize that traffic. You could make much more if you do this since you're getting a lot of good traffic every month.

Are you using some sort of lead magnet to build an email list? With 9K uniques/day you should be able to build an impressive list quickly.

With a list you can do affiliate marketing, sell solo ads, or both.

Thanks for the tips, I'm looking into CPA marketing now. I've always heard affiliate marketing has a lot more potential than adsense/ads in general.

        Exact.

Build a list from your traffic.

        Then you have several options:

        - Ask them what they want and send it to them (for a commissions or your own stuff)
        - Rent the list, sell solo ads as suggested.

Sure build a list, but don't expect to sell much. People visiting entertainment sites and eye candy sites don't buy. The best you could do is send your subs back to your site for new posts.

I think in the entertainment niche you need truckloads of traffic to make decent money... like 100k daily visitors.

I do recommend adding some media.net ads in addition to your current ads.

If you have images, add in-image ads... They can pay $1.50 to $2.50 per 1,000 pageviews.

9000 unique visitors a day and you make less then $100?

It seems to me like this traffic is BOGUS traffic and not real people who are looking for a real work at home business opportunity.

How do you know that? Why in the world would you make such an assumption? To me, it seems like you might not be a real human being, maybe you're an AI, and your posts are BOGUS.

OP, the niche itself might be a limiter. Also, AdSense isn't very profitable in most cases. Only certain kinds of sites will be able to make a very decent amount of cash from 10k visitors a day. If it's an entertainment news site, it's unlikely people love to click on those ads.

I understand that you are using a different business model that I am about to tell you about, but it won't hurt to sort of incorporate the business model you have with this one...

I understand you are doing some sort of adsense, but why not also throw an opt-in form up on your website, because as you say that the visitors are unique and not bot traffic, you should be able to build a nice quality list pretty quickly.

While adsense may do well for one person, not everyone is going to get the same CTR and conversions as the other person.

I dabbled with adsense for a while and made some money, but never made consistent and long term income until I started building my list.

But I wish you better luck than I had, but again with 9,000 unique daily visitors, I would put together a targeted lead magnet offering it for free, with a nice strong follow up sequence that will lead to a pitch of an information product that is targeted to what your website is about, whether that be your own product or an affiliate product.

A lot will depend on how well your ad blocks are integrated into the content. People have become adsense blind now in the way they did banner blind. You need to make the ads almost seem like "associated content" or "further stuff you may find interesting".

It's all about creating a congruency between what they read and what you want them to click on, or your CTR is going to suck.

I've had partners with huge success moving away from Adsense and using stuff like Taboola. Their embedded code delivers images and text, making it look like an article block.

Not sure if they will play with a partner with only 9000 uniques a day but worth a try. Payouts can be 20x what Google pays.

OK, that where those "Content You May Like .." links come from. I never knew
this was from an advertising platform but I've always seen them on popular news
websites. Sometimes it says "From around the web .." Had no idea those were
      really ads.

I'm not sure how much traffic you need to be doing on a daily basis to get in Taboola, but you probably shouldn't have any trouble getting into Content.ad.

That could add anywhere from $5-10 CPM to your earnings. So think another $50-100 per day

Jason, I was referring to talfighel comment, which made a lot of sense.

Most traffic sources come from vendors who have squeezed all the profitable buyers out already. As a result leaving you with freebie seekers or people who've seen your offer many times, or people who're not interested in your offer at all.

Based on the OPs replies, I'm guessing he has some sort of authority site with lots of content updated regularly that isn't predicated on affiliates generating traffic or him buying solo ads.

So both of you guys should start a thread on the topics you were talking about bc it has nothing to with this thread...

9,000 visitors a day? You know that's 270,000 visitors every month?

This goes to show that you need an immense amount of clicks to earn some decent money on Adsense.

Have you tried other methods of making money off your website? Do you capture email addresses?

With 270,0000 visitors every month there are many ways to capitalize off of this, what about private advertising? Affiliate marketing? Create your own products.

There are a bunch of ways to make money online, and seriously if I was given a website that 9,000 visitors a day I would explore every single option to take advantage of it.

    Good luck,

Use content.ad and you should make over 100 bucks per day with them. I do with a site of around 3K uniques per day.

First of all, I would STRONGLY suggest to build a list if you don't have one. And try adding some affiliate products to your website so you can have another source of revenue like JVzoo, Clickbank, or Cash Network.

This may help you break past that revenue stoppage your at.

With that kind of traffic I would definitely try different monetization strategies.
You can easily try some affiliate offers and if you can try to sell your own product there too. If you successfully sell your own product to such an audience you can make much more than you're doing with Adsense.

As others already told you, if you haven't done it you should build your email list. Once again with the visitors you're getting you can quickly build a big email list that will quickly work as another sales channel for you.
