Anybody advertising to local businesses?

I have a hobby blog about a local sports team that has built up a good following over the last two and a half years and now has about 200 unique visitors per day. Up till now I haven't really bothered trying to generate an income from it other than throwing up banners and seeing if any of them work (the answer is not really).

However I think the site is ideally suited to local advertising as the audience is predominantly from the town and surrounding areas and there are a couple of big businesses that I would like to approach and offer them advertising space, possibly on a solo advertiser basis.

My question to anybody who has done this kind of thing before is how much is a site with 200 uniques per day worth in terms of a monthly advertising budget?

You can't get an answer to that question.

200 unique/day is a really good number. If you advertise, it'll come down to how targeted those visitors are for that particular offer. E.g You visitors might be 12-18 year old kids so you'd have no luck in selling local newspaper subscriptions.

You should introduce a small personal survey on your site getting your visitors to enter their age, hobby, interests etc to know them better. Then approach the right company!

Ofcourse you can put up any add and get paid monthly, but that would'nt get you repeat customers and good reputation. Word travels fast!

      Thanks for the reply.

Ok then, assume that I actually know my local area and I am targeting the local business based on the fact that I know the demographics of my site and am confident that they are a good fit for the advertiser I would be approaching.

What would be a rough monthly ballpark figure, would it be closer to 100 or 1000?

I'm really just looking for a very basic starting point not an exact figure.

As I said, if it were me I'd start by looking at what the local papers in your town are charging (and getting) and find out their circulation numbers.

I've dabbled in local advertising over the years and it really can vary quite tremendously based on the demographic of your traffic and the types of businesses that you approach. You have to try and make sure that these are a good fit. I've always found that looking at the rates local papers charge for advertising is always a good way to get a baseline, although remember to take into consideration their circulation numbers. If you offer exclusive advertising to one company you can obviously charge a bit more than for multiple ads, which is another factor to think about.

I live in Tanzania. And I know for a fact, that SOME bloggers who blog in Kiswahili and FOR the local market, are raking in dollars to the tune of $3,000 in advertising revenue per banner per client AND they have MANY banners on their blogs. I can only imagine WHAT they make. Sounds obscene doesn't it? Well it probably is, given that Tanzania is a third world country that is MORE expensive than Europe and America for that matter, it makes perfect sense. That said, you're onto a good thing there. I suggest you approach businesses local to you and ask them to make you an offer. These bloggers mentioned above were OFFERED this money. They didn't ask for it. The money was put on the table for them to TAKE.
