Wordpress theme help PLEASE! Fhi-Zin

Hello,

I've been trying to figure out this theme for a few days with no luck. I've read all the documentation, googled, etc for help but just cannot get it to work.

Is there anyone who has used the fhi-zin theme? It's a great looking free theme that would work perfectly for what I'm doing, but just can't get it to display the images on the main page.

So please - if you're good at wordpress, or have used this theme, I could really use the help! I know it's something small that I'm overlooking or doing wrong, but cannot figure this out.

Thanks!

  • Have you recently upgraded to wordpress 2.8?

If so, some people are reporting things like this not working and it is some times the themes (mostly the free ones) and some times a plugin issue.

If you have upgraded to 2.8, try just deactivating that theme and using the default one to see if what you are trying to do works on that theme.

If you didn't upgrade can you explain how you are trying to get these images to display on the front page so that we can try and help a little more.

    Cheers

  • I did just upgrade to wp 2.8, wondering if that's the problem. Below is the "how to" documentation that was included with the theme:

    Post and Page images

The small images with reflection which are attached to each post are set using the custom fields. You'll need a square image with a 120px X 120px resolution for this, without reflection. Upload this image using the standard Wordpress editor tool and copy the "Link URL". The copied URL would be something like this: "http://www.bydust.com/examples/fhi-zin/wp-content/uploads/2008/10/random_image-4.jpg".
Now, we can create a new custom field named "image_small_120x120". Do to this, open the "Custom Fields"-box under "Advanced Options" when writing a post/page.
There you have a "Key" and "Value"-field. Our key will be "image_small_120x120", the value will be the Link URL you've copied. Paste the Link URL in the Value-field and press "Add Custom Field".
Now your image is attached to your post/page and will be displayed on the website. The reflections are added automatically.

Like I said, I've tried this for the past few day and have not gotten the images to display. Here's what I've tried:

    Click on "new post"
Click on "upload/insert - add an image"
    Uploaded 120x120 image
    Copy URL for uploaded image
Enter "test" or something similar under "name" in Custom Field
Enter copied URL in "value" field (again under Custom Field)

    Save Changes
    Publish

Unless I'm reading something wrong, this is what the developer says you need to do to make it work, but it doesn't. If the problem is WP 2.8, can I revert to 2.7? If so, how?

    Thanks again!

    • OK this seems at first glance from your instructions to work a bit like Featured Content Gallery Plugin, which I am just about used to using.

From the instructions above, it seems to me to be saying the Custom Field Key is "Our key will be "image_small_120x120" and not "Test" so that might be where you are going wrong.

Also, with FCG the Custom Field is not there until you put it there, so in a new post, go down to the Custom Field area and click on "Add Custom Field" and then you need to put the Key as stated above. Next to that you will then add the URL where the image is hosted.

Any subsequent posts or pages will now have that key for you to select so you won't use the "Add Custom Field" again, just for that key.

Going to post this bit for you to read and re-read your instructions again. I'll be back..

    • Why would you enter "test" or something similar when the instructions say to enter "image_small_120x120"?

That will cause the images not to show up every time.

Just enter the info as in the instructions and as Susanne has explained and you should be good to go.

  • Sue,

You're awesome! Thanks for the help on this...I'll be away from computer for a while but will check as soon as I return. (yes, I need a blackberry).

If I can't get this to work, would you recommend the Featured content plugin?

Also, if I name each pic "image_small_120x120" how would that work? I would have thought that each image had to have it's own name.

    Thanks again!

    • I must have replied at the same time as you as my last post - lol.

Entering "image_small_120x120" is not really naming the image, it is labeling it as an image that will go into a certain field and utilize certain rules established withing the Theme.

The images uniqueness is in the pic's URL. All the URLs will be different (or can be different or the same).
      • [ 1 ] Thanks
    • Yes each image has to have its own name (preferrably SEO friendly, e.g. "Picture by Monet", or "Lassie The Dog") but these instructions are not talking about what you name your images.

There will be one KEY that you will pick for each image you want to display on your front page.

You will start a new post or page for each image.

You will upload each image and then have a unique URL for that image.

The first time you use the KEY in the Custom Field, you will need to create the name of the KEY, in this case "image_small_120x120".

You will need to place the URL (which is the value) into the value box next to the key (at the foot of the posting area in WP).

For each successive image you want displayed on the front page, you won't need to create the KEY again, you will now create the post or page, upload the next image, note it's URL for the value, go down the page and this time Select "image_small_120x120" from the drop down menu (in the box marked "select" and then place the unique URL for this image in the value, then publish.

If you are still not sure, later I can create a screen shot of the Custom Field area for you.

And yes, I would recommend Featured Content Gallery plugin, they have a great support forum for a start but I do not know if that plugin would fit what you are trying to do with your site.

This is a site I am in the middle of working on for someone, please ignore the header, they are still working on what they want there.. this site uses the FCG:

      http://www.teamdarkhorse.co.uk/

And this is another one I did for my daughter, that also uses it:

      Original Art & Design

Bryan Gardners Custom Studio Press Themes use the FCG (most of them).

I believe the FCG is a free plugin though.
