Many affiliates reporting earnings drops in the past few months - Recession?

On the Ebay forum there's been a few threads lately about how earnings have dropped for many affiliates. Some are questioning Ebay for that or wondering if the recession is to blame. Examples:

What's really going on here? in Special Discussion Boards in eBay Forums

What is going on here my income this month so far is only almost 30.00? in Special Discussion Boards in eBay Forums

In the first an EPN rep is actually chiming in but of course the line there is "everything A ok". Sooo, what's the experience with you Warriors? Any significant drops with EPN in the past few months? What about Amazon, same there or as consistent as ever? As I posted in the first EPN link, there IS a shopping trend decrease on ebay since February 2009. -->

I'm not sure though if these google trends cover sales activity or just search activity. Either way, there's a decrease and I guess many affiliates are feeling it.

As for me personally I can't really say much because I only started February this year. So I have nothing to compare to. So far my earnings are not big, but that's mainly because I don't have much site traffic yet. I am concerned about these reportings so I would love to hear from other Warriors about their recent affiliate performance. Thanks!

Typically IM slows through June-Aug as people spend less time on their computers and more time outside...this is not the case for everyone or every product, but many see rather substantial slowdowns during this time.

Has always been this way - even in bricks and mortar.

Really May through September can be slow down months with July and August being the slowest.

I have not seen much if any evidence of the recession affecting IM, in fact I think it has probably improved it in many niches because people go online to find better deals than the high street.

Affiliate marketing is possibly the most recession-proof "job" out there. All lies I say

As I'm also relatively new to IM this is my first "summer drought" .. I've noticed my amazon affiliate sales have near halted to a stop this month

Wow, haven't you made the connection yet to the recession we've been in for months and months now?

I can't believe it's only just dawned on you.

If you look at the chart one can see it's not just the summer months. It starts in February. Interestingly, amazon apparently has a downward trend since that time too, but it's a little better than ebay's. Here the comparisons:

    http://www.google.com/trends?q=amazo...te=2009&sort=0

So I take it about 50% of the affiliates here would say they're feeling the recession in their earnings?

I disagree completely. There are some amazing recession proof niches. There are also niches that thrive in bad economy.

Sure! But not every affiliate has such a niche. One can always do one though...

Also interesting, ebay overall has a higher volume than amazon. But amazon actually has an equal performance to last year, in contrast to ebay.

Internet marketing in general, is the most nichable business on the planet.

Even you see a decline in your business its not that hard to oepn up a new niche that has more strength in this current economy. No business is recession-proof, but these small niche businesses are damn close!
