can a web page be too good

We always here how we are supposed to put together our web sites so after reading something on one of our sites pages it makes the person want to go to another page and read more all in the process of trying to get them to buy something.

But can a page be too good, I find myself looking for specific information and often go to a an internal web page because of course it is ranking very high in my search.

Once I get to that page I read what I want and leave I got the information I was looking for and don't see the need to look over the site, I may bookmark it and look at it later but maybe not.

Since I do this I know other people must do it as well and even though I try and put things on my site to entice people to go to other pages I know by looking at my google analytic,s that many of them don't. I guess my question is what do others do to get people to not do what I do when looking at a site.

  • Bounce rate would be the metric to look at... I do exactly the same as you. I remember a year or 2 ago I was really experimenting with distributing the content that you would normally have on one article onto 2 pages. The first page gives just enough content for them not to leave, the second page gives the answer they're looking for. I'd then link the two incredibly obviously so that the visitor wouldn't be able to finish reading the web page without knowing the information is 100% available on the next page.

    Long story short, in a lot of cases it worked well, my bounce rate was a lot lower, but the amount of thought that needs to go into the distribution of content wasn't worth it for a relatively small reduction in bounce rate.

    Another factor worth noting is that some traffic sources, keywords etc inherently have a high bounce rate because the audience is only looking for a very specific and small amount of information like a true/false yes/no answer. There's not really anything you can do about this.
