Advice? Handling An Article Submission

Hello,

So, I've submitted an article to an online publication. The intention is to link build. I've got a link to our website in the article. It seems as though they are happy with the article.

The problem is this. They have emailed me and asked me why I sent the article. If I tell them the truth, they may just say it's not something they'll publish (because it's essentially a marketing strategy for links) or they'll tell me I have to pay to get it published. Or they'll make the links NOFOLLOW.

What would you do in this situation? Tell the truth? Or... you know.. make it seem a little more wholesome and innocent?

Regards,

The purpose should not only be to get a link but to get free advertizing. Tell them you love their publication and would like to be featured there because you have something relevant that their readers will find valuable.

Just an update. Lex, your suggestion worked. I laid it all out, telling him I loved it and they were still very interested in the article. Cheerio!

Sounds like you just passed a test. I've been known to ask that kind of question myself. If you tell me straight up you want to trade value for my readers for a link to more of the same, you're in the running. Try to bullshit me with something "more wholesome", and you blow any chance of ever appearing on one of my properties.

        Well done...

I'm relieved to hear it (just in case I ever try that carp-fishing niche): I always tell them that up-front.

Yea, it blew up on me about a week ago when I took it down the other "wholesome" path on an extremely valuable (other) site. So I wanted to switch it up, and learn from making the mistake once... not ten times . Thanks for the kind words John.

The "why" shoud be the value of your article. Your purpose is really not their business. That's not a lie.

I agree. But I've never come across a major publication that isn't interested in my intentions .
