Blog Posting...Your Opinion Please...

I have been article marketing for a major retailer. Their goal is to drive awareness of their brand. Recently they decided to start a blog. They have set it up at blogspot.

Does it make sense to start a blog at blogspot as opposed to their own developed website...ie does Google like blogspot so much that they are likely to rank higher in the search engines with blogspot posts as opposed to their own web posts?

Other thoughts?
Thanks!

I've heard differing views on this. I wouldn't necessarily discourage them from doing this, and nothing wrong with linking the two sites together so that the blog gets some inlinks.

It is okay to contact me! I have been developing software since 1999, creating many popular products like phpLD.

No, if they are a major retailer, it does them no good to go with Blogspot. It makes them look bad. It's like putting your flagship store in a terrible neighborhood.

The only "big" groups that make sense to do that are public good projects like free software and the like.

Leave Blogspot for your affiliates to use to promote you, not for your primary.

I really agree with Keith that Leave Blogspot for your affiliates to use to promote you, not for your primary one

Blogspot/Blogger is great for supporting sites and niche blogging but it isn't good for corporate presence. It should be on a subfolder or subdomain of their domain, preferably using WordPress or Joomla for content management.

Yes they dont own it...that is my concern.
However someone told me that links at blogspot would be a good thing.

What are some reasons I should share for them NOT to use blogspot..ie you dont own this...other thoughts?

Do you think Squidoo would be a good idea? Or again are they better off developing their own stuff at their website?

  • Makes no sense to me... if you are building a Brand Awareness campaign why would you use someone elses brand in your URL?

This brings up a good point. For SEO and traffic purposes it only makes sense that they would have their blog on their own domain. With proper use of internal linking they can take advantage of promoting whatever it is that they sell which has it's own SEO benefits. Additionally, any backlinks generated to the blog will benefit the site as a whole too.

Bottom line, there are a ton of great SEO reasons why they should be hosting their own blog. Too many to go into here.

Also, the traffic that they generate to their blog may be more likely stay on their site than to click from a blogspot blog to their site.

Next, it looks more professional and they're building their own brand.

If properly promoted, their blog will outperform the alternative and they will own it.

Squidoo might not be bad to explore but Twitter might be a better way to go. For example, Zappos shoes uses Twitter to great effect. But, there's no reason why they couldn't do both.

      Hope this helps!

Make SURE you put it on a wordpress blog on their own hosting account. A blogspot blog is not truly owned by you or the retailer, it is still owned by blogger. Plus, your own domain name will do more for your brand.

Set them a blog in a directory inside their own domain. Make them use Wordpress or any other blogging package. That's the best way to maximize link juice.

One could register a domain and use Blogger so instead of mysite.blogspot you would have mysite.com. Then hide the navigation bar at the top of the blog and also get rid of the Blogger favicon in the address bar so that no one would be able to tell it is a Blogger blog.

Also, it may or may not be true that Google loves its own Blogger more than Wordpress but the bottom line is that whenever and whatever Google wants to do with their digital real estate under your domain they can do and you have no legal recourse for lost business.

Paying for hosting (could be as low as $5 a month) your domain gives you more legal rights to lost business due to "down time".

It also allows you more flexibilty when setting up download pages, uploading files, and securing and protecting areas of your site.

Very good....my thought was the blog should be on their own site and you all have confirmed. Thank you.

I do want to drive mucho, mucho traffic to them and have been doing social bookmarking, blog posting and article marketing, content writing...what else would you suggest for traffic. I thought about Squidoo but just not sure if I should be driving traffic to Squidoo rather than to their main site.

Also I think they may have wanted to separate it so the bloggers did not have access to the main site...which is a very large, well developed site.

What do you think of the idea of putting the blog on the .net version of their site and linking to the main .com site?
