Someone Wants to Buy my Domain

Hi everyone

I had a call today from someone who wants to buy one of my domains. I bought this domain, it is a .co.uk earlier in the year based on some research about toys for Christmas 09. The product itself is only just about to be launched and this firm that contacted me wants to jump on the bandwagon.

I would be interested in your comments about the kind of price I could expect for this as I have not done anything with it yet so there are no sales or leads to sell on but it clearly has a lot of potential.

They wanted me to quote a price but I pushed them to come up with a starting offer so I am waiting to hear back from them.

Any comments would be much appreciated because I haven't come accross this before.

Cheers

Don't go too low - you never know what they are thinking.

We bought a name for $153k and a company inquired about it a month later that was launching a product/service and wanted us to come up with a price and we probably would have been happy to flip it for $100k, but we held out and their first offer was $1M - we took it :-)

This is very big sum. For that money I would rather change my domain name, then to give that sum for domain. But it is problem of branding - brand name in domain.

Woah, that's load of cash just for one domain. To think anyone would get it for a million bucks is almost unbelievable.

Back to the question the OP posed, the best suggestion would probably let them set a value for it first. That would somehow reflect how much they are willing to invest and how highly they regard the site. From there, you can try to negotiate on things and maybe try to counter offer the buyer. Whichever way you choose, I'm very sure you'd pick the best for your site. Good luck with it!

Wow - I don't know what level they are thinking about - it is for a toy range where to top priced item will be about $40 and 6 other items in the range. Due to be launched in August in this country.

    Demographic is 6+ little girls.

Any other guidance would be appreciated by anyone. I don't want to jump for a small amount if I can hold out for more.

    Thanks Guys

I don't know the product or potential, but it could be huge if its like the disney franchise brands here.

Go high, you can always back down, the .co.uk will keep it down from big time price too -

Remember this is going to be their brand, on everything they market or advertise so its important to them.

I'll provide my paypal for my commission

Good advice, and I would let them go first.

My actual suggestion is, check into the domain appraisers and get at least 2 or 3 opinions as they may vary greatly, but this will give you an idea about the guesstimated price range.

Then, with that knowledge in your back pocket, let them make the offer first.

It's that old saying that says, he who speaks first loses. If you mention price first and it's way lower than what they WOULD have offered, then you'll be hard pressed to get back to that number.

Then, whatever number they give you, $10, or $10 million... As soon as they give it to you, make a sucking in sound with your mouth and scrunch up your face (I know this sounds funny, but even though you're on the phone, still do this) and sigh negatively... Almost like you just heard something horrendous.

Then wait about 5 or 6 seconds... And say...

"Is that the best you can do?"

This would be much easier to explain in person or even over the phone.. but I hope you get the idea...

You want to make it seem like the offer was REALLY Disappointing... And then follow up with that question to elicit whether or not they are giving you a firm number or just throwing some low ball offer to see if you'll take it.

Then you can always tell them thank you for the offer and you'll have to think about it and get back to them in a day or 2, and tell them to call you back if they haven't heard from you by day 3.

Then wait for them to call you. The reason you do this is whoever is calling wants something. And you want to be on the opposite side of that.

Have you ever noticed that the people that don't need things are the ones that get the most.

How many times in the past year has the owner of a restaurant picked up your check? Now how many times do you think the owner of a restaurant has picked up the check for Justin Timberlake, Angelina Jolie, Brad Pitt or Britney Spears?

There is a risk of being on that side of the spectrum that they won't call you back and will just find another domain, but if you want to get the most for the domain, these are some solid tips for ya!

        No Risk, No Goodies.

Problem is I don't know if I should be going for 10K or 100K - I'm imagining somewhere between the two.

I think they think I am someone who knows nothing - which I am but don't want to let on I am such a newbie. They are supposed to come back tomorrow with an opening bid. I will keep you posted - the paypal link can come later.....

    Thanks Hugeetc.

Suggest that you are considering putting it up for auction at eBay or SitePoint or here. That may prompt them.

Bear in mind different appraisers will give different values. Ultimately it'll depend on how valueable your domain is to any buyer. If it has the keyword in their and they're going to spend £10,000's on advertising then paying £50k-£100k might be a snip for your domain.
Another option to consider is go in very high see what they come back with. If they don't come close offer to lease the domain to them for a set fee per year. You might need a official document drawn up by a lawyer for this. However if this toy is successful for a few years then you get a fee each year.

Ive bought and sold a few domains over the last few years with my biggest purchase being $9,500 for a .com.au. Certainly nothing as big as the numbers mentioned above.

But what Ive found is that if someone, (especially a business) wants the domain, they see value, and potential, and will most likely be willing to negotiate some decent numbers.

I would most definitely let them set the starting price, and work from there.

Best of luck with it, and be sure to post back the outcome.
