What Is The #1 Skill You Need For Marketing Online?

Hi Guys,

Been a while since I have posted a thread but I do frequent in here a lot and see what is going on.

You know it is interesting when you have been working online for a while and see people at different stages of the journey.

You see threads on "How to get the first sale?", or "How to up sales?" etc...

I just thought I would ask this question and of course there are no 'RIGHT' answers - was just wondering what your opinion is on:

"What is the #1 skill you need for marketing online?"

Here are my thoughts:

Understand it is a journey!

I know this is not specifically about marketing online but when I started I thought if I can just make $200 a day I will be sorted for life! Once you get to $200 you think $500 will do.

Once you hit $1000 a day you think you have it made until you hit $5000 days and so on...

I have hit a few $15000+ days and honestly can tell you that it does not mean you have MADE it - not in my opinion - you will STILL get ups and downs.

Here is the secret:

"If you can treat your DOWN time with the same attitude you have when you are winning you have it made!"

So ATTITUDE is EVERYTHING and understanding you will get your good times, your great times and your not so good times. You will NEVER get to a point, money wise where you think "Ahh i don't have to work so hard now!"

Ok second one and this is more specific to marketing online.

The #1 skill:

Constant Content Creation

As long as you have a market the #1 thing you can do is produce quality content constantly. This has been the number 1 skill for me that has seen some of my greatest pay days and helped me through the slumps.

Not all your content has to be geared toward making money.

If you concentrate on giving, giving, giving you will receive - it says so in the bible.

Focus on solving problems and giving as much help as you can and you will make money.

If there was one SKILL it would be content creation for me.

Let me hear your thoughts guys,

All the best,

Chris Jones

Great post Chris, I totally agree with you. Content is key to success.
That is why it is very important that you have passion about the subject you are writing about.

Also another skill is perseverance. Stick to your plans and not stopping because of results.
I agree with you on money as it is only a factor and not a motivation.

    Spot on Chris.

Also think you need to REALLY know and understand your audience!

When you know and emphasise with their pains, desires and problems - and you put their needs before your own wants - success is SO much easier to achieve.

After that, I think it's knowing how to sell the solution you create for your target audience.

Short and sweet guide on mindset behind the business! Nice one Chris!

Based on my experience the key points are:
    1) having vision where you wanna go (the first)
    2) money is a result, beside you are after value giving and offering, and money will follow it (offer vlaue first and let money chase you)
    3) keeping yourself on the track (as Alvin said!)
    4) always testing new ways and being flexible with the approach
    5) have fun with everything you are doing! If you have fun you and you offer value together you will get to the success land faster!

The #1 skill for marketing is being able to connect with people, whether through text, audio and/or video. If you can get people to care about what your doing, saying and offering then the world is your oyster. And the easiest way to connect with people is by showing genuine interest in them and helping to solve their problems.

I have a dilemma here... I will let you choose the best. For me the most important skill is persistence or being a student. You can't succeed without the first one, unless you have special abilities. There are always obstacles which will try to stop you and if you are not persistent, you will 100% fail. There isn't smooth way to success, otherwise we will not be prepared for it and soon will destroy it.
And about the second one skill - being a student - I think that you can't succeed truly if you don't learn something new every day, because the business is evolving each second. And if you don't want to be a student who learns new information about how to be better in his topic, you will soon be part of the crowd and nobody is going to find you.

I would want to say copywriting but marketing takes the edge.
If you have all your ducks in order but don't know how to
market your products or service everything else will come
crashing down. There are many great products that never
saw the light of day because the owners didn't know how to
    market them.

Think about all those "talent search" shows such as
American Idol and the Xfactor? Where were those
talented winners all the time--they were unknowns.
Then they got "marketed" on the show and their
    lives changed forever.

Thanks everyone some interesting thoughts here and awesome info.

Kerry, think you are spot on - you need to understand your audience and their needs and i daresay if you can do that and provide a service that answers their needs you don't need to sell that much.

Love the list - pretty much the same as mine - mindset is everything.

This is spot on in my opinion - love this.

It is when you help genuinely that you will get results, if you help without asking for return and you keep on giving that is where some of my best results have come from.

I like this - my take on this is "Be a good student but don't be a follower!" - learn and use what you find useful and then add persistence to the mix.

      Spot on about marketing Ray.

Traffic generation - sales copy helps, but the main thing is targeted traffic and loads of it.

      Awesome stuff!

Thanks Ray, I'm going to agree with both. Constant Content (although it can be acquired faster than it can be created)...

      AND marketing.

Almost 30 years of Online Content Creation and Marketing...and it is the chicken or the egg question.

You need something to sell (content in any and all forms) and you need someone to buy it.

      Product-Market Content-Consumer

For me, the MOST important thing is

to understand the INTERSECTION of where these meet, where your Content meets your Prospect.

IF you master the Intersection, you have the keys to the kingdom.

        Awesome stuff!

That is really powerful stuff and getting into the psychology of marketing.

I like the way Frank Kern puts it.

Very simply - if you had a guide on dating for a guy named "Bob".

You think about what Bob wants to do - his end outcome.

Meet a girl, get married, have sex - it doesn't matter in this case because to do all 3 he will have to go through certain steps or he might get into trouble.

For instance - he will have to:

Approach a girl, Talk to her, get her to like him, ask for a date, get her to say yes etc...

If you help Bob with these points and THEN had a full paid guide that told Bob how to act on a date and assuming he had success with your free stuff - that is when you knock it out the park.

        All the best,

        Chris Jones

      Hi, great post.

      I'm going to have to say it boils down to one thing which is a skill because you have to work at it in this business like no other and that is;

      FOCUS

There are so many distractions and shiny objects that make you say, Ohhh, do want....

You have to make your plan and stay focused.

      Thank you, Patrick

Spot on - the starting point of ALL action is motivation!

You need to make your dreams big enough and that mean enough to you so you take action and feel motivated even when you are not getting immediate results.

        Focus is an awesome one!

I struggle with that everyday - funny thing is the MORE you do, the MORE you get the harder it is to stay focused.

It is essential for ANYTHING you do.

Also Gary Vaynerchuk says that in his book (Jab, Jab, Jab, Right Hook) to give, give, give and then ask.. But - my number 1 skill would have to be list building. Building a subscriber base to be able to give value on a consistent bases and market related products too solutions.

Absolutely, a lot of the time I find with most niches once you have found out what the questions are, what they need - the unmet need is normally time and quality of service.

If you can focus on giving more than anyone else, of course more of what they need you have it made.

      Spot on!

List building is a must and it took me a lot longer than it should of done to get involved in list building.

To build a list though you need to market, and have plenty of content pointing to your list funnels - but fully agree with you, once you have a list you have a point of contact for your peeps and they for you.
