Selling Leads - What do I need to know?

I own a small website that is generating a good amount of leads for our call center. Often times we are unable to keep up with the demand of our web-leads as we focus on the inbound calls. I am thinking now, to start selling off our web leads, but don't really know where to start as this is not our normal business.

I think finding buyers won't be a problem at all, my biggest concern is legal issues that I am completely unaware of. What do I need to worry about as a lead seller? Is there some sort of guide I can read? I search all over Google but really couldn't find much with the query "Selling leads things to know", etc.

I am sure I must have privacy information on the website which pertains to selling contact information. What else?

Also do you guys recommend using lead distribution software ? We will have roughly around 2,000 leads to sell per month, so probably it will be easier to manage with some lead program.

Thanks for any help

    Hello demigr,

There are a lot of variables to consider when selling leads, not the least of which is legal liability. The short answer to your question is "It depends." Below are some factors to consider:
    1. What type of leads are you selling?
-b2b leads can be handled quite differently than payday loan leads for example.
    2. How are you getting the leads?
-are your leads SEO, PPC, coreg, data bought from a 3rd party?
    3. What are the terms on your landing page?
    4. To whom are you selling the leads?
-and how will they be using the data?

These factors, and others, should help to frame answers to your question regarding legal liability when selling leads. For other things to consider when starting a lead company, please view our whitepaper on the subject at:
    White Paper

Lastly, our software does allow you to track, route & bill for leads based on custom business rules you create. Be sure to check out Lead Distribution Software, Call Routing, Ping/Post for more information on our services.

Thanks for the replies. I was actually looking at the Boberdoo software last night actually To answer your questions

    1. Student Loan Consolidation Leads
    2. 60% SEO 40% PPC
    3. Terms can be changed accordingly. We don't want to sell our database of leads, just the ones going forward that we cannot handle ourselves. Our current opt in states "I consent to receive emails, phone calls and text messages from xxxxxxx regarding my federal student loans. I understand that consent is not required to receive free information or make a purchase."
    4. Other student loan consolidation companies.

Ill take a look at that whitepaper, thanks!

    4. Other student loan consolidation companies.
You might consider some kind of solo ad arrangement where you send a one time message to these leads for a fee.

    Hi demigr

If you have leads that you do not have the company resources to work, holding on to these leads is profit you are missing out on. I totally agree with your strategy on selling off your web leads.

There are companies who strictly generate leads for clients and make great profit in just the sale of the leads.

Issues to worry about is privacy, as you were mentioning. Having proper privacy policy/terms of service available on your website/landing pages is what will keep you safe. Reviewing other landing pages should give a good idea to what you should cover in your terms. Your opt-in should link to your privacy/terms, and this way have the applicant confirm they understand the terms. Search for student loan consolidation and I am sure you will find a nice number of landing pages for your review on the privacy and terms.

We've been using lead capsule for our lead management needs and they have all the lead generation and distribution features we can ever need. Easy to use and their pricing is very solid.

Good luck in your ventures and rock on!

some of us guys just revshare the data, as opposed to selling the data,
and on the tos of your site just let your customers or leads know
how their data will be shared.

that's the easiest way in my experience.
