advice on niche forums

would anybody like to share whether or not money can be made by building forums. Obviously most are not as succesful and bustling as WF, but I see potential in owning a small forum. I have seen forums that charge 5-25 bucks for affiliate marketers to have a place to post AL's.

Hi, it depends on the niche e.g. A forum geared toward college students (who by virtue of being at college do not have a lot of money) may not return as much as a forum geared towards "Soccer moms" who probably have more disposable income.

Also, start a forum on something you enjoy as well as something that may return you money.

    Cheers

There are many ways you can make money from a forum. Even a small one. You can sell advertising for a start if memberships are not an option.

You can also sell helpful products to your captive audience.

If all else fails, incorporate adsense.

If you can get a forum going you can do well with it, so just be creative in monetising it.

^^ I agree with the above statement. It can work, you just have to work it.

Forums can be highly-lucrative. You're going to find a generally high EPC from a quality forum. Growing them and running them is not a walk in the park, however. Part of your business plan at this stage, perhaps more than anything else, should be concerned with growth.

Although you can certainly do well with a forum, they are not easy to get going...

If you don't have enough users, your forum will be a ghost town and no one will want to come to it...

If you have a solid user base, moderation takes time to ensure a quality experience.

I have seen some small niche forums work really well... I used to be part of one in the real estate arena. In fact, I believe they had a paid option for premium content and he didn't have a massive user base, but I assume (based on what I could see as a member) that he was doing high 4 figures per month with the forum... possibly more with coaching, etc. on the backend.

Like everything else... research your target market and find what they need... if that's a forum of some sort, you should do quite well.

Starting a forum is more difficult than starting a niche/authority blog so I would prefer the latter.
