Money Making Opportunities: Misfit or Just Misunderstood?

Lately I've noticed many people criticizing Internet Marketing or more specifically Money Making Opportunities ... and the people in it!

Many people place MMO's (and the people who offer them) somewhere below used car salesmen, slip and fall lawyers and penny stock brokers.

Admittedly its had it's "wild west" moments like many marketing entities. But it's not all bad like many people will attest. Or it it?

Many of the household named Guru's we all listen to in the I.M industry were rescued, got there start or cemented their legacy through MMO's.

Yes, because of its low barrier to entry ... it's "buyer beware" more than most other businesses. So, what's your answer to the negative Money Making Opportunity image.

  • Ignore it?
  • Run the other way?
  • Outlaw It?
  • More Government Intervention?
  • Certification or Licensing requirement?
  • Keep Looking Down Your Nose at It?
What?

Eh, in my experience there's only a negative image until you tell your friends that you're crushing it online.

Then you loosely explain how you're doing it - they look wide eyed and admit not really understanding - then you either explain more or shrug it off smiling and asserting how simple it really is.

That's exactly how it was for me...depending on which of my friends I was talking to lol

The fear, anger and confusion people have of the industry largely stems from huge misunderstandings of how sitting at your computer equates to receiving money from stuff done on the computer.

That may seem simplistic but those of us who spend 8 - 12+ hours daily to earn our keep know and understand the work involved to get things rolling. There is no problem because we understand our process, though, yes, there is work involved.

I appreciate that you've also brought up the low barrier to entry aspect of the industry.

That alone by definition brings in the lazies and the low effort opportunity seekers who then exponentially increase the overall failure rate of the industry thereby increasing the misunderstanding of what it really takes to make it.

So as I see it there's really no misfit here, just grand and colossal misunderstanding.

Change your last name to Vanderbilt and claim you are an heir. People who get their money by birth are usually held in high esteem.

Ah, probably people who market MMO's and those who sell products and software to people in the MMO market. Even if you don't, outsiders will lump you in with them (even if you're an email marketer). Image affects credibility - which translates into sales (or no sales).

        Hey Niche,
Honestly people like you and me basically we should say 'who cares !'

I do not mean that in a flippant manner...
but the ones of us who take pride in what we do and the value we give, need to just continue putting our nose to the grindstone and let our 'colors' rise above the rest of the crap that surrounds us

Well said. I appreciate your observation and advice.

But unfortunately if you work in anything associated with the MMO market (including internet marketing in general) you're often guilty by association - in the eyes of more and more consumers.

Unless the trend changes I believe someday the word "Internet Marketing" may have to be changed to a more politically correct term to escape the negative stigma.

Here is the paradox of your question. IM and MMO are both misfits and misunderstood. Having it both ways can have its advantages and disadvantages. There is nothing like being insane with a purpose! My two sense!

Lawyers, Used Car Salesmen, Dentists, Police and MMO all have haters.

    As long as people...

Want to win in court, they will need Lawyers.

Want to Buy a used car, they will need Used Car Salesmen.

Want to Keep a nice smile, they will need Dentists.

Want protection from the bad guys, they will need Police.

Want to make 30 zillion dollars a day from home, they will need MMO offers.

Is the reason they criticize these people is because they are making money. Human nature has it if they don't understand how they are making money that it must be wrong.

Thats always the easiest option. It's either too hard for them or there perception puts a kind of fear in there mind. So they think the glass is half full so they will criticize.

This is my believe not for all there is always people who deserve to be criticized but don't label everyone as the same.

A cooling summer mist, a heavy fall storm, even the cold almost snow of the winter...it all rolls off a duck's back.

I treat criticism and praise exactly the same. A thank you.

      Then I quack.
