Why are we getting .com domain name?

Hello fellow warriors, I just wondering why are people recommending .com when we get a new domain name?
What is the difference between the others like .net, .info, etc?
There're different in price also, so I think there must be reasons that people recommending .com domain name.
Any inputs?

I don't know the exact answer to your question but .com is more powerful. I know .info seems to be more of a "cheap" fly by night kind of domain. Maybe someone can shed some light for us. I'm curious as well.

I think in some situations it is more common for those who are just average surfers. If you had a highly brandable product that people were searching for by name the natural thing is type .com. People just assume the site is going to be whatever.com.

I believe that .com, .net and .org domains are seen as more valuable in terms of SEO.

The dot com name is the one that most people will type in if they do not know the exact url.

Dot com is more recognized as an authority site .

a lot of people will tell you to secure all the dots just to be sure . If I was going to do that I would probably only secure the dot com and net and maybe org . There are so many out there now that if I really wanted to secure my domain I would be more interested in securing all the different spellings in the dot com field .

I read somewhere that a .com is preferable if you are promoting offline. Like Cerberus said, most people assume the .com. But, but if you are promoting online and people are clicking or cut and pasting any domain would do.

I don't know. I haven't tested anything myself. I do have a bunch of .info, but I got them all to mask my redirects and they were mighty cheap, too. I got like 6 at a time so that meant free privacy on my domains, too.

    Thanks for the respond.
Is there any proof that .com is better in terms of SEO?

I have seen both sides to this argument... Personally, I have .info sites that are ranking above their .com versions, but I have done a lot of SEO.

I'm sure if you look around you can find a lot of information on what makes .com names more popular.

As far as I know .com is also more trusted and I've even heard that people in the UK have started opting for .com or .co.uk domains because .com's are simply more trusted.

I think its mainly because .coms are more popular, so of course that's what's going to show up more often on a Google search. There may be alot more to it, though.

Someday a .biz or .info or .tv website will make it big, but until then, they won't get much respect.

    It's for hysterical raisins.

There was a short period of time - maybe a year - when any idiot could set up a domain registrar, take registrations for any domain extensions he wanted, and skip town before anyone figured out none of them worked.

This didn't happen frequently, but it made the news often enough that the "never buy anything except .com" mantra has entered the consciousness of the internet. It will probably never go away.

Sort of like "all your base are belong to us"...
