Do you beliece in Alexa?

Hi,
do you use Alexa.com as a way to monitor traffic on your sites? Do you believe that it gives accurate results?

This question about my poor, useless, pathetic namesake seems to be asked about once a week, at the moment?

For most people, most of the time, it's complete nonsense, in my opinion.

All it really measures is the number of visitors a site gets who have the Alexa Toolbar installed and running in their browser at the time of their visit. And internet marketers are just about the only people who use that.

And even that, it can measure only terribly unreliably and randomly. Which is why it's a complete waste of time. They can't measure any other traffic. The only way to monitor traffic reliably is through a site's server logs.

The last time I looked at my own "Alexa rankings", I checked out two of my sites. One, which is a private blog only really for my rather widespread family and gets almost no traffic at all, had a really low "Alexa ranking", meaning that they think it "gets enormous traffic" (but not according to my server logs!), and the other, which genuinely gets so much traffic, in floods, that I have to have special hosting for it, is apparently nowhere to be seen!

It really is as unreliable as that.

But when you look at what it's actually measuring, that's not a great surprise.

These things are of possible, slight, debatable relevance if you're (i) selling a website to someone who for some reason "believes in it", or (ii) selling advertising space on a website to someone who for some reason believes in it. For anyone else, and any other purposes, I think it's more or less a total waste of time, signifying nothing.

Clarified in these threads, among many others, some of them very recent (the search function is your friend, but only if you use it) ...

Does Alexa give total traffic qty?

    (newb) Is Alexa important?

    How important is Alexa ranking?

    Importance of Alexa.

How do you find the guru sites that are highest ranking in Alexa?

I find alexa is getting old and not as useful as it used to be.. I find it's a research tool, but not really something i would use for my own sites..

Agreed. I use SEOQuake's PR and Alexa tool just for a basic measure of traffic to a page. I don't put a ton of weight into it, but more so as an estimate.

I always laugh when I see an Alexa post because I think many a warrior forum member Associates the name with you Alexa before the said ranking site ... that's saying a lot a for an internet marketing site,

My answer is a big yes I believe in Alexa she is as genuine as they come ...

I don't know a single normal person who has the Alexa Toolbar installed. So I think Alexa is mostly useless.

I use to concentrate a lot on what Alexa was saying about a site. I found I was really chasing my tail. Concentrate on your brand and what you are doing and go from there.

    thanks!

It doesn't measure traffic accurately outside the US. For example, freelancer.com gets a lot more traffic than warrior forum but is ranked worse in Alexa.

I don't trust Alexa alone, it can be easily manipulated.
