Hello Warriors,

I am pretty new to wordpress but I am beginning to love it!! I normally used drupal but it is beginning to piss me off a bit with its shite templates and tricky nervous updates that seem to take about an hour if they go smoothly which is very rare!!

Anyhow, I have noticed a lot of templates have the navigation colomn on the right, can this be moved easily via the admin panel?

I dont know why I dont like them on the right but I just dont

Regards

Danny

With so many WP templates, it would be a lot easier to just find a template with the menu already on the left. Most of them would be a nightmare to move around...

      Hi Danni

The file to change is usually called pagetemplate or masterpage. But....
Not all themes are easy to alter. It depends on the way the originator has set it up.

if you see that the navigation element is set up for "right" you can simply replace it with "left". But this sometimes messes up other formating.

If you have a theme that has a support page the answer may be there. You could also pay the author to change it.

What is the theme - I could check it out for you

    Hello Kenj,

I have not decided on a theme yet just something I noticed and thought I would clarify it up before I started.

    Thanks again

    Hi Danny.

I have a few wordpress blog templates with the links to the left, and also a whole series on 'becoming a wordpress expert'. I would be happy to let you have these to check out, if you would consider reviewing them for me? If they are workable, then it could be a little answer to my problem too. Let me know if you want to try them (for free).

    regards,
    Katie

In Wordpress the columns to the side are most often called the sidebar and a theme will have a sidebar.php file. If there is a left and a right column the files typically are called sidebar1.php and sidebar2.php

Having said all that there is no need for you to look at the files if they are modern themes and are 'widget' enabled.

There are many themes for Wordpress and you will need to upload them to your host account themes directory.

In the admin area of Wordpress you can change the theme very easily, there is a preview function before you make the change permanent.

If you want to change the contents of the sidebars use the widget editor under the Appearance / Theme menu item in the admin panel.

As soon as you add a widget ( drag and drop) it will over ride any previous hard coded content in your sidebar. This will only return if you cancel using the widget. This is not an issue as the widgets can allow you to replicate most entries that would have been there anyway - search, similar psots, RSS, categories, archives etc etc

The text widget allows you to add html code into the sidebar.

The only thing you cannot do is move the sidebar itself.

If you find a theme you like but has a right sidebar instead of one on the left let me know. It shouldn't be too difficult to modify the theme and I would be glad to do it for you as I have a great deal of experience modifying WP themes.

    Thanks,
    Andy

There are a few themes out there that have an option in their admin panel to switch from left to right menus. I think the Flexibility Theme is one, but I don't currently use them.

One of the reasons a lot of them are on the right is for SEO purposes as the juicy content will load and be read by the SEOBots first. Though a good theme can still load the juicy parts first no matter where they are located.

I think once you get the hang of Wordpress you will love it even more. It is awesome!
