I have just received a letter from the above with a highly resistible offer to renew a .com domain through them.

Namecheap (my usual registrars) charge the equivalent of £5.98 per year, the above want to charge me £20 for a year or £65 for five years.

Can't imagine they are going to get many customers.

    They actually get a fair amount of action from those. They're not the only group to be involved in this kind of thing, either.

    The way it works is simple enough. Businesses tend to pay whatever small invoices are sent to them. This is especially true when a company uses a "fear" motivation in line with a very minor relative expense.

    If more people read the paperwork the way you did, those companies would go away soon enough.

      I just remembered the name of the Primary Perpetrator of this kind of thing in North America: Domain Registry of America.

      A little Googling on the name will give some useful hints at what to look for.
