open paint

click edit then paste or just press ctrl+V in your keyboard..

MWSnap is a good free one but it is difficult to offer good suggestions without knowing your full requirements.

The one above captures the screen, areas of the screen and fixed regions .

Did you need anything else like callouts, annotations, image processing etc?

Yes, call outs annotations, etc would be really great- does the software you mentioned have these features?

  I use "Snag It" and Microsoft "One Note" for screen capture. Both work great although I find "Snag It" to be a little more flexible.

This method will likely seem strange to some, but you can use the method from a earlier poster and put it in Microsoft Excel to adapt to your needs.

1. go to the screen you want to capture
2. on the keyboard, use Ctrl+Prt Scr
3. open blank Excel spreadsheet
4. click paste
5. Crop the picture to your liking.
6. use the call-outs, arrows, annotations etc. in Excel as you wish to improve the picture.
7. once you are done you can repeat steps 1 through 5 to copy the picture from Excel to another area.

i find that vista has a neat "snipping tool" under accessories that works find for what i need.

if you need to capture a whole web page including what you can see, try fireshot, a plugin for firefox.

For $50 you can't go wrong with Snag-It 9. This is considered by many to be the best screen capture SW out there. I use everyday and couldn't survive without it.

But, it you want to start with something FREE then try Faststone screen capture V 5.3. I use this too! FS captures region (freehand) scrolling web pages, has editor for balloon text markup, arrows, torn edge effect, etc.

A+ Freeware - Multimedia & Design - FastStone Capture 5.3 (last freeware version)

Note: This Version (5.3) is Freeware not a 30 day trial or nagware, etc. But it was the LAST version that was free. Now, FastStone is up to V 6.4 and these newer versions are $20.

And nice thing is you can use FS anywhere anytime - not just when you are online!

I use Screen Shootit. Great for very quick screen shots. You can set where the capture files will be stored, setup a name (eg capture), then capture either the whole screen, active window or custom area. Each time you capture a new jpg file is created (eg capture1.jpg, then capture2.jpg). Once you've created them, you can edit them in any graphics application.

If anyone wants a copy of ScreenShootIt, PM me and I'll send it over to you.

FastStone sounds like a great app though Sparky!

I use FastStone. It's awesome, cheap, and they even have a version of it to install on a usb thumbdrive, so you can use it on any computer no matter where you happen to be at the time.

I wish there was a plugin to take snip-it's and upload them to wordpress directly. Instead you have to take a screen shot, upload it, then insert it into a post.

There was a screen grab firefox plugin that once did this but it created a new post with the image rather than just upload it to the media browser. It doesn't work any longer anyway.

So annoying.
