Hey guys,
i just found out about these domain extensions. Like example.academy , example.beer , example.vacations and so on...

I'm yet not really sure what these are. Are they top-level domains? Can anybody buy and sell these? And how do they rank on search engines?
I've never seen one of these, but i'm curious if they'll get important in the near future.
Someone here who has some experience with these domains extensions? Pls let me know.
Thanks

    And, more importantly, .shoes ...

Personally, I think it's too early to tell what is going to happen with all these new extensions.

I know some people are excited because they think they can grab a one word domain name and a new extension and have a very lucrative investment.

To me, that's not an investment at all. It's a hobby and can become an addiction. I have a friend who spends his spare time registering what he thinks are great and valuable domain names. I keep warning him that he is investing in property in the middle of the desert that will never produce income in his lifetime. He owns over 1,000 domain names and all of them are garbage.

If you want to invest for profit, register dot coms that are short, easy to spell, and that would be sought by niche business owners in specific markets that are in high demand.

Remember, for every domain you register you're going to have renewal fees that you're not going to want to pay year after year.

Some good advice from Steve B there.

    I'll just add . . .

Are you familiar with Tulip bulbs? If not, you'd probably enjoy reading about the Tulip bulb craze and building castles in the air. Briefly: a domain is worth whatever someone else will pay for it and value is based on market perception and certain intrinsic values. (I'm over-simplifying, I know.)

If you want to invest safely in domains, choose dot coms.

If you want to assume a little risk, try the new extensions, but apply the same principles of value estimates that you'd use for a dot com.

Fact is, the shear number of new extensions, and the possibility of more coming, is actually enough to dilute their value. What you have to wait for is when folks begin to build castles in the air. This can be set off by a number of factors; an algo change by Google, for instance.

Didn't that part of your question actually answer the question?

I never see them in search results, either. Which is a very important clue to me.

By the way Alexa, .beer is far more important than .shoes, or is that a gender specific thing?

Must be; either that, or I suppose those beer-drinkers are usually barefoot ...

If you're buying for investment and want to get the most return for your buck, or building an authority site on it, I'd stick with .com. Occasionally I register .net, but it really depends on what I have planned for the site. These new domains were intended to make icann and the registrars richer, but they are untried and untested so far and their resale value is unknown. Go on a registering spree with these and you might just get stuck with them, so make sure you really like them ... like Lexy with .shoes
