Analytics Goals and Funnel Question

Hi Fellow Warriors,

I have a question regarding Goal tracking in Google Analytics. I always make sure that the Goal pages and steps in the Funnel are unique, so usually have no problem with tracking conversions and funnel steps.
However, one of my clients has a profile page set up as the Goal in Analytics, and the steps of the registration as the Funnel, and the Conversion volumes seem to be a bit strange for me.
My question is: if I have required steps set up in the Funnel, will Goal page views counted as new goal conversions, when the user went through the Funnel once and later returns to the Goal page repeatedly?

Example:

Step 1: Landing page - example.com/landing-page.html
Step 2: Registration part 1 - example.com/user/registration.html
Step 3: Registration part 2 - exapmle.com/user/registration-additional-info.html
Step 4: User profile - example.com/user/profile.html

When the user logs in to his profile later he will be always landed on example.com/user/profile.html. So my question is, will these new logins be counted as new registration goal conversions all the time?
Until now I thought that the user has to go through the exact steps of the funnel all the time to be measured as a new conversion, but based on my clients Analytics profile I'm not sure now. Either this, or there's some other problem with the setup.

Thanks

That person will increment the goal count for that step one time for each session on your site. Here's a handy FAQ about the funnel visualization report in GA:

The lack of control over conversion attribution and counting is one of the drawbacks of GA over more advanced platforms.

Thanks Dan, that's what I thought. Although this can be averted if my clients adds a seperate thank you page at the end of the registration funnel.

I know that Google Analytics has it's drawbacks, but it's still a great free solution. What other options would you suggest?

        Mike,

I'm not a guru with Google Analytics although I do keep an active track of the 'Real-Time' tab to see what's happening and see the traffic behaviour when they're on my sales offers.

Just a suggestion ok - I installed Content Analytics which is a free app from the guys at SumoMe.com (AppSumo - Noah Kagan) and it's given me more insight into what prospects are doing on my sales offers than anything i've ever seen.

I've done a quick video review this afternoon of it (and their cool List Builder app that gave me an extra 600+ subscribers when my first WSO went 'Deal of the Day' on the WF).

You might just look like a superstar to your client by setting them up with this tool and giving them insights into buyer behaviour so that they can optimise their sales page offers.

        Hope this helps.

        Cheers, Rob Alexander
