A trick I discovered about making money with TeeSpring...

TeeSpring.

For the uninitiated:

1. You design a tee-shirt
2. You set up a campaign
3. You promote your tees
4. When sales target is reached, tees are shipped, you get paid.

The trick? Viral trends.

A lot of the work I do online is really set up as a hobby. The majority of my work is devoted to "The Business" but, being a geek, a lot of my downtime is devoted to fooling around with different markets, niches, systems, products, ideas. TeeSpring falls into this category for me. But when I first got started, I made the mistake of treating it too much like a hobby. I chose a genre that interests me (we'll call it Star Wars, but that's not it) and designed my shirts and developed my entire platform and traffic system around what interests me. This is USUALLY the best way to go in any business. Do what you love, right? Passion shows. Knowledge does, too.

But what I've noticed - and it happens without fail all of the time - is when I follow a viral trend, or better, leap on it BEFORE it goes viral, shirt sales here overshadow regular sales by a phenomenal percentage. If you're into TeeSpring, I suggest using all of the various news and trend sources to help shape your current business model.

    Thanks and congratulations.
I've always thought of going viral with this -- many people are doing it and it clearly works.

Here's my concern: Many of the "viral" things these days are pictures and text memes (funny quotes, etc). I have a real concern over infringement/copyright. So, how are you personally dealing with that? Are you printing image and text-based memes to your shirts without a second thought, for example?

Unless im 100% wrong and these silly memes have absolutely no infringing potential.

    Thoughts?

      Thanks!

Pretty much 99% of memes infringe copyright. A simple still from GOT? Your own caption? Infringement.

When I talk about viral trends...

Think, instead, about trends where no copyright can be infringed. Examples: Clocking, Selfie Bombing, Sellotape Selfies, T-Rexing. Think fashion, sayings, think news items.

To create your tees, you have 2 options, well, 3 (but 3rd isn't accessible to all):

      1. Public Domain Content
      2. Hire a Designer
      3. DIY Content

With this being more a hobby for me, I do mostly 1. I've tried 2, dabbled in 3 (where I make something from scratch), but the results really weren't any different. It helps to have a good mastery of photoshop. If not, then I can see how 2 and 3 will be instrumental to your success. The trick here is having a killer idea, a great caption or visual symbol / message, and knowing enough about Photoshop to get what you want out of freely available content.

    Update: TV Shows.

The last 48 hours have given me quite insane results with one campaign in particular. A certain TV show aired it's first episode of the new season on the 12th. In preparation, I'd created a campaign, not infringing copyright, that I knew fans of the show would like. The night the show aired, the campaign went nuts.

What I'm going to consider doing now (and what you could look into, too) is basing campaigns around upcoming TV shows and movies. The trick is not to infringe copyright, but to simply design a tee that the target audience for that show or movie will enjoy. You can allude to them and often poke fun. If you're doing this, I recommend reading up on parody law.

  • Good post OP but 99% viral trends are celebrities, movies, games, clubs etc.. all limit us to not use them or get punished. I see people making money on Teespring with footbal clubs but they have to use huge imagination and hope the team lawyer doesn't crack down. I saw one guy sell mindcraft shirts by morphing the logo and saying it's mindcraft in description but not making it look exactly and not saying the words on the shirt i'm sure the lawyer can argue, but it's a fine line.

That leave 1 % viral trends like the selfie example which is still a potentially huge money maker.

I tried 2 shirt ideas and failed but I'm going to keep brainstorming it would be cool to get one to to work!

      Thanks for the compliment!

Most people I see trying to take advantage of viral trends - and, indeed, many people doing tees in general - are infringing copyright. This is something I would never do.

What you need to do in this instance:

      1. Create original works.
      2. Never use any copyrighted images or text.
      3. Design tees based on trending themes.

I made the last point bold so I could address it here. I'll get a little specific. The Walking Dead aired on October 12th. I knew one of my traffic sources would be all over this show the moment it went out. So, in preparation for it, I had a design created around the theme of the upcoming show. "... around the theme." No copyrighted material was used. Simply: a product was created that would appeal to a target audience who was fond of a trending TV show.

Most people making tees are not professional internet marketers. This is a bonus for those of us who know what we're doing. You just need to be ethical and think out of the box and use what you know about the industry to get your edge.

The TV Show Tip can have a dramatic impact on tee sales, implemented in the right way.

It is not as easy as it sounds and might be very misleading to the newcomers, though very much possible if you are good with growth marketing or ALREADY have a following to get your initial momentum going.

I never said it was easy for newcomers. Hope I didn't give that impression.

Rarely is anything easy in IM - for vets or the beginner. Take me. I've been at this for 20 years and I'm still known to work 14 hour days.

Yes - about having a following. You're quite right!

This, of course, is the key with TeeSpring. You need an in-built audience, naturally, so you have a ready group of prospects.

      Glad you like it, Chris.

Yes, copyright infringement is where most newcomers make their mistake.

What you need to do when creating designs:

      1. DIY.
      2. Outsource.
      3. Public Domain Images (that give commercial, reuse, and modification rights).

And, of course, none of the above can infringe copyright.

I'm quite handy when it comes to design, so I've been known to throw together some myself quite a lot. Problem for me lately, though, is the time constraint factor. I get around that by coming up with the ideas myself now, but outsourcing the actual designs, and just monkeying around with my own in the evenings or on coffee breaks. With one of my other businesses, I'm lucky enough to have some designers. But if you need to outsource, Fiverr is your best bet. They have an entire section dedicated to this area.

Quick question for you though - so the design itself doesn't infringe, but are your descriptions still loaded up with the right keywords on TeeSpring to get the buyers' attention? (Or do you load the keywords up in the marketing/targeting?)

I've been thinking about delving into T-shirts but haven't wanted to waste any money trying this out and failing so its been nothing but a thought so far but I still love the idea since it obviously works for a lot of people.

I think, besides the design, the real way to be successful on Teespring is to have an audience. I think many people get frustrated because they create a design that they enjoy, but then no one ever seems to see it and it dies in its tracks. Really, the audience is key, much like in any kind of marketing.
