Squidoo have done a Goaticles

Looks like Squidoo have gone the way of GoArticles. They're inserting totally irrelevant ads direct into your text via "infolinks".

Combined with my brain's insistence that the "Goaticles" misspelling must mean "goat testicles," I found this response hysterical.

Squidoo has grown large thanks to people like us. Now they start to use us on terms we do not like.

Seth Godin talks about permission marketing. I never gave him the permission to do this.

(OK I probably have somewhere in the agreement text that I did not read)

Still though I think we share the revenue with them.

The marks don't show in opera at all.

But I'm seeing them in FF3.5. I'm not so sure it's a good idea mostly because I have three on my page, and NONE of them are even halfway relevant.

Thanks, Geode. I may have to unpublish my pages, or move them. Let's see how the experiment evolves first.

Hmm, I didn't know that, I just might have to do that, as anything I can do to get visitors to focus on my content instead of their ads, all the better.

I just noticed this as well when checking the stats for my resveratrol guide on Squidoo. It's definitely a bummer and it just goes to show why you shouldn't completely rely on a third party platform.

I also noticed an irregular and significant drop in my rankings although I don't no if it is related to this change. Perhaps they are tweaking and testing a lot of stuff over there at Squidoo.

I have to say that this is a pretty clever move.

Basically build a platform that will allow tons of marketers to create an insane amount of content for you. Keep them looking clean so that Google falls in love with them.

Now that you have a huge amount of content and a ton of traffic go ahead and start pounding them with your own revenue creating advertisements.

I think it will drive away a lot of people from creating future content on the site but if the traffic numbers are already there then why not.

I just checked the alexa ranking and they are 497.

SO basically just build a very simple to use platform and get everyone to create content for you. Once the traffic explodes start using it to make yourself a lot of money.

          Very smart.

It's getting tougher now for us to profit from these web 2.0 peoperties, so we've all got to start moving awy from them to say that we don't like it.
I don't think they are really to concerned about getting new content published.

They offered a great platform that allowed them to amass an amazing amount of content and traffic.

Now it is time for them to turn all that traffic into a lot of income for themselves.

It was a nice ride while it lasted. I know I launched my IM career using the power of Squidoo so I can't be mad that they are looking to cash in.

There will be another platform that will come along to fill the void.

Thanks for the heads up Kev. Many marketers never usually check lenses after posting content. It appears HDRider is correct in that you can opt out of these ads.

    Here's a recent quote from Squidoo's FAQ:

    "WHAT ARE TEXT LINK ADS?

As part of the ad testing we're doing in June and July 2009, we will be running a 1 week test with Infolinks. Sometimes, text link ads on sites look... not so good. But we believe that with relevance, low link density (meaning only a few per lens) and a cool design for the ad popup that happens when your readers click on the ad link, this could be a pleasant experience for people who land on your page. So we're giving it a 1 week test and tracking numbers to see how it goes. As always, you can easily opt out of the text link ads. But more money for lensmasters and for charity never hurt, eh? Either way, we'll keep you posted on what we learn. And if the test doesn't turn up really compelling results for the community, we'll turn it back off. Thanks for hanging in while we experiment during these interesting economic times."

    One question...

Is this ad insertion by squidoo the reason why it's now limiting our own links coming from the same domain?

How do we turn these unsolicited ad insertions off?

    Thanks,

      Michael,

So far, this is the only way I can see ...

      1. Click on "Edit" on one of your lenses
      2. Click on "Lens Settings" on the right-hand side of the page
      3. Checkmark the setting "Opt out of text link ads"
      4. Click "Apply"

Unfortunately, if you have hundreds of lenses, this process will take you awhile. But, like I said - I haven't found an easier way yet.

Squidoo have said that if they decide to keep the text link ads (and there are a lot of Lensmasters hoping they won't), they they will provide a 'Apply to all' option.

So, best thing to do is sit back and wait to see what they decide to do.

Thanks for the info about opting out of those text links. I was also hoping to opt out of the banner ads, but you can't do that unless the Lens is donating 100% to charity. I'd like to opt out until they can provide more appropriate adverts - I'm not too keen on weight loss and fashion advertising on a page about spaceflight! I wouldn't mind them selling hosting or televisions, computers, cars - there's lots of options, so hopefully it will improve in time .

Squidoo has always been a revenue-sharing system. Many of the modules - Amazon, eBay, CafePress, Zazzle, etc. - are part of this program. Adsense is too. The payout is as follows:

      5% - charity
      45% - Squidoo
      50% - lensmasters

It seems that the InfoLink experiment is just another attempt to add more revenue sharing options.

Here is part of the Squidoo FAQ that Jeff included:

As always, you can easily opt out of the text link ads. But more money for lensmasters and for charity never hurt, eh?

As long as they are not relevant to my lenses, "I don't care!" And if you can opt out of using them all the better.

I have a feeling were going to see a whole lot of this stuff, from all the free sites you can create. Oh well, it comes with the territory of " FREE!!"

It's not FREE. The time you spent writing that content is worth a lot more than they're giving you credit for.

      You're kidding, right?

First -- I think it's totally uncool to force advertising on others' work. Even if it costs a lot, it should be a rev-share or a permission based deal where people consent to it. At a minimum, offer an opt-out, so people who care can turn unwanted ads off.

But, have you seen the content on Squidoo? We all more or less support Seth Godin, but that site is an embarrassment to his name. A majority of the "lenses" are simply pages to lure unsuspecting Web visitors into a maze of clicking affiliate links.

Most of the pages/lenses on Squidoo are simply junk. As such, they should have the right to serve the most offensive, unrelated ads on it. A number of the pages are either about credit repair, **** berry, or phama-spam. If they had any sense of decency, they would delete spammy pages -- and piss people off in the process -- so they don't attract spam.

I know my thoughts might go against the grain, but it's just my opinions. I believe they should ASK or permit OPT-OUT to more aggressive advertising methods. On that same note, delete junk pages. (Or turn them private/walled-garden).
