Google Analytics vs Server Statistics

Hi guys,

I've been noticing constant discrepancies between the statistics offered by google analytics and my server.

For example, my server tells me I had 28 hits yesterday while analytics says 7 and this goes every day.

Do you have the same issues? Do you know the reason for that? I guess I should trust my server more and yet google analytics offers incredible tools.

    Hey Bud,

You'll always have those descrepancies, for some obvious reasons...

Google's tracking code "urchin" is a javascript.

    Browsers with java turned off,
    older browsers,
highly secure library & corporate computers,
some cell phone browsers will simply not execute it.

Secondly, goog analytics is 3 hours+ behind intentionally.
I forget why, but basicly they take time to report all the numbers.

Also, hits are not a big priority, i'd focus on uniques.
If someone hits "refresh" on their browser 5 times, that's 5 hits.
However, if 5 totally different people land in your site, that's 5 visitors.

    Sincerely,
    Danimal

Your web server will record all hits, including those from bots. Google Analytics filter search spiders and other popular bots out. Like Danimal said, because Google uses javascript, it won't cache a few cases where the platform someone is using might not support it.

Javascript-based trackers like GA will miss some visitors. Your server stats will include your own admin site visits as well as non-human mechanical visitors like web crawlers (unless your stats package has a filter for them).

The real number -- the number of viable human "customers" -- falls somewhere in between. I use both server stats and GA.
