If you haven't bought a hosting package yet you might want to checkout Godaddy, they have a 1$ package that comes with a free domain name at the moment. Pretty hard to beat!

Are you speaking of VPS hosting? That is their main service, and I'm not sure if they offer web hosting.

I've used digital ocean before, but they ended up getting rid of their browser ubuntu GUI. It was really slow anyways, so I switched to VPS.net and I've found it much easier. It's also very easy to scale it to your needs.

You click on 'Create Droplet.' Then your 'box' is created.

Digital Ocean, like Amazon EC2, you need to understand how to setup a 'blank' server. They do not set it up for you.

Not sure why neither service offers a basic setup, its just a preset files and such.

I believe they are still giving out a free year at Amazon EC2 so you can try that out in advance before you spend any money to see what it is like.

Digital Ocean is great. But it's not for beginners or idiots. You install everything from scratch -- which is exactly what I want. If you don't know your way around a Linux distro -- stay away.

Linode a competitor and very good.

        Amazon is also good.

DO does have some "one click installs"

        Django
        Docker
        Dokku
        Drupal
        Ghost
        Git Lab
        LAMP
        LEMP
        MEAN
        Node.js
        Readmine
        Ruby on Rails
        Wordpress

With that said, it's not "true" cloud hosting like Amazon. It's basically just a VPS with SSD drives. I wouldn't use it for mission critical apps, but it's great for development, learning, or screwing around.

You can find lots tutorials on setting up the box from their website, one of the most comprehensive I might say. Like the above poster say it's great for screwing around, learn your way around Linux and server management.
