When people contact domain-owners for this reason, it very often turns out to be the first part of the well known "appraisal scam", in which the intending buyer starts by suggesting a very high figure, and then asks the domain-name owner to have the domain "valued", for a fee, sometimes a substantial fee, by a specific "domain-name appraiser" who does this for a living. After the valuation is paid for, of course, the intending "buyer" suddenly loses interest.

As the saying goes, "it only happens all the time".

    • Yes, I have had this happen several times. In all cases but one, the person inquiring offered a ridiculously low purchase price and I turned it down. Never did hear back from the potential buyer. I just assume they were "fishing" as I would have sold the domain for a reasonable price.

  • The old adage applies here... If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.

I have been approached by strangers out of the blue over a domain before, and wound up selling them for low four figures.

But... for every one of those, there are a hundred other inquiries that are doing the appraisal scam, fishing for steals, or just wasting my time.

Generally speaking, if you buy domains and sit on them, you will not make much. You need to have a plan, and approach potential endusers (in an ethical way) for it to be viable.

Of course, it is much easier to do with worthwhile domains to sell as well.
